SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State women's basketball team came up a few plays short falling to St. Mary's 67-62 at the St. Mary's Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Belles (1-5) shot 35.4-percent from the floor and held St. Mary's (5-2) to just 34.7-percent. ASU committed 19 turnovers and was only able to make 22-of-34 from the free throw line. The Rattleers outrebounded the Belles 50-37 and recorded 16 steals.
"We saw tremendous progress from our team today despite shooting 22-of-34 from the free throw line and committing 19 turnovers," ASU head coach Cayla Petree said after the game. "St. Mary's is a really good team that has been to the NCAA Tournament the last few years and they showed it today. I was proud of the way we fought and competed until the end. We have to get in the gym and clean up a few things but I was proud of our progress."
Jackie Patterson earned her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Jasmine Caston scored 19 points. Diamalises Rivera had her best game of the season with 11 points. Amanda Weaver added three points and four steals in the loss.
St. Mary's started the game by outscoring the Belles 8-4 over the first four minutes of the game. Caston hit a 3-pointer off an assist from Weaver at the 14:13 mark to cut the lead St. Mary's lead to 12-9. The Rattlers would go on an 11-0 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 23-9 lead until Michelle Rosewell sank two free throws. The Belles responded over the final four minutes of the half with a 13-6 run to cut the lead to 29-22 at the break. KeAnna Kelly and Weaver would both hit layups and ASU would force three turnovers that results in five points during the run.
The Belles came out of halftime and would cut the lead to one point three different times over the first five minutes of the second half. Â Jackie Patterson's 3-pointer at the 18:53 mark made it 29-28 followed by a Rivera jumper with 18:00 to go cut it to 31-30. Jasmine Patterson hit a layup to make it 33-32 with 15:05 to go in the second half.
The Rattlers would respond with a 9-3 run to extend their lead to 42-33 midway through the second half. Caston and Rivera both sunk free throws on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 44-39. A quick 7-1 run over the next minute put ASU down 51-40 with 7:05 to go in the game.
Caston sunk her second 3-pointer of the day and after a missed Rattler shot Caston made two free throws that sparked an 11-2 run. Jackie Patterson scored six points during the run including a layup and a jumper to bring ASU with two points at 53-51 with 4:01 to go in the game.
St. Mary's made it a six point game on a Kyra Littlejohn layup and free throw but Caston hit her third 3-pointer of the game to keep the Belles in it at 61-59 with 1:07 to go. The Rattlers would outscore the Belles 6-3 over the final 1:07 to secure the 67-62 victory.
Morgan Pullins led four Rattlers in double figures with 23 points. Dezirae Elias scored 15 points with Littlejohn and Etheridge adding 11 and 10, respectively.
The Belles return to the Junell Center to host McMurry on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.Â
