Belles Take Five-Set Win Over Tarleton State

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team were down 2-1 to Tarleton State but battled back to move to 11-2 at home with a five-set LSC win over Tarleton State on Friday night at the Junell Center.

The Belles (19-6, 11-5 LSC) limited the TexAnns (20-6, 10-6 LSC) to a .120 hitting percentage and held the advantage in kills 63-59 and digs 112-103.

"It wasn't the prettiest from us," ASU head volleyball coach Chuck Waddington said. "We showed a lot of guts. They had us down and they had us beat but we came back and fought in the second set. It could have very easily could have went the other way. We just put a few points together and put some pressure on them and took some big swings at critical moments. That is what cost us the WT match. We weren't willing or able to take those swings and we made a change tonight. It is nice to see your team learn from a loss like that. Tarleton State is extremely talented and it was a big win for us tonight."

Brianna Sotello led the Belles with a career-high 24 kills and added 20 digs while Abbie Lynn recorded 15 kills. Shelby Wilt was one of three to have double-digits digs. Wilt finished with 29 while Alexa Johnson had a career-high 22 digs and 54 assists. Zoey Hanrahan added seven kills and three blocks. Mallory Blauser killed six balls with eight digs and Arielle Bond recorded five kills.

Tarleton State took advantage of 11 hitting errors by ASU to take the first set 25-23. Hanrahan had four of her seven kills in the first set with Lynn recording three kills. The Belles were down 15-9 in the second set before turning things around. Sotello had seven kills, six after being down 15-9, to help the Belles rally to win the second set 28-26.

ASU struggled in the third set committing 11 hitting errors as Tarleton State won 25-20 to take a 2-1 advantage. The Belles responded in the fourth with another big set from Sotello. The freshman had eight kills to aid the team's .178 hitting percentage in the fourth set. Mallory Blasuer sent it to the fifth set with one of her three kills in the set after back-to-back TSU errors.

Sotello again led the way in the final set with five kills including match point. The Belles and TexAnns were tied at seven before a Blauser kill sparked a three point run to put ASU up 10-7. TSU fought back to tie it at 11 and would fight off three match points before Sotello ended it with her 24th kill of the night.

Hailey Roberts led Tarleton State with 22 kills. Katie Covell was one of four TexAnns in double-digit digs with 28. Ayssa Garcia and Roberts both had 18 and Emily Medlin finished with 17.

The Belles will play their final regular season match of the season tomorrow at 12 p.m. against Lubbock Christian at the Junell Center. The Belles two seniors, Kailyn Troxell and Shelby Wilt, will be honored prior to the match.
