SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team won its second-straight game at the Junell Center with a 75-55 dominating win over St. Edward's.
The Belles (3-5) shot 53.5-percent from the floor including 66.7-percent from behind the arc. ASU held St. Edward's (5-2) to just 29.5-percent from the floor and out rebounded the Hilltoppers 40-35. It is the third win in the last four games for the Belles. ASU added 71.9-percent from the free throw line compared to 64.3-percent for SEU.
Three Belles scored in double figures led by Jasmine Caston's 17 points and six rebounds. Amanda Weaver and Jasmine Patterson each added 14 points. Weaver's season high in points came from shooting 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Diamalises Rivera scored nine points and Jackie Patterson put in seven points. Shauna Coleman grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and scored six points.
The Belles started the game on a 12-0 run to jump on St. Edward's quickly. Weaver and Caston hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game and the Belles forced five SEU turnovers through the first six minutes of the game.
The Hilltoppers responded with a 7-4 run to cut the deficit to 14-6 at the 13:05 mark of the first half. ASU continued to add to its lead by forcing four more Hilltoper turnovers that led to a 14-1 run to go up 28-7 at the 6:28 mark of the first half. Elaine Herrera scored an old fashioned 3-point play after getting foul on a jumper and sinking the free throw during the run.
St. Edward's found a spark in Mileka Loydrake late in the first half. The guard scored six points on a 17-5 Hilltopper run to cut the Belles lead to 33-24 going in to the break.
Eight Belles scored in the first half led by Caston's seven points and Jasmine Patterson's six points. St. Edward's Loydrake added 10 points in the first half. Â St. Edward's was held to just 29.6-percent from the floor while the Belles hit 9-of-21 shots at 42.9-percent.
The two teams played even coming out of the break through the first four minutes of the half. ASU found its shooting stroke again as the Belles hit 63.6-percent in the second half.
After a St. Edward's jumper to make it 36-29 with 16:49 to go, Jackie Patterson hit a jumper followed by another Weaver 3-pointer to ignite a 16-2 Belle run over the next eight minutes of the game. ASU went up 54-31 as five different Belle players scored during the run.
The Belles would extend their lead of 25 points three different times over the last five minutes of the game before the final of 75-55.
Lexi Fathree led the Hilltoppers with 18 points while Loydrake scored 12. Kathleen Brisbane added 10 points and six rebounds for SEU.
The Belles will return to action next Friday, Dec. 12 against McMurry in Abilene at 5:30 p.m. Â
