ASU Football Fall Camp - The Freshmen

The Rams are in the middle of the second week of fall camp and Angelo Sports caught up with three freshmen to see how the transition from high school to college was going.

Jacoby Gaylor, Legista Beckford and Travier Jackson interviewed and discussed what they have worked on during camp, what they are learning from the veterans, how the transition from college has been and their feelings on playing at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.

Gaylor is a defensive back from Cypress. He was named honorable mention all-district last year. Beckford, who played with Gaylor at Cypress Ranch, played defensive end last season. Jackson is a wide receiver from Red Oak and caught 28 passes for 478 yards last season.

"We're really excited about this year's freshmen class," ASU head football coach Will Wagner said. "Athletic, is the best word to describe them and the last 13 practices have reassured us that we didn't miss with the kids in this class.  They have easily picked up what we are doing on both sides of the ball and have shown to make plays".

The Rams will return for practice No.16 tomorrow at 3:45 p.m.


 
ASU Football Fall Camp: The Tight Ends

Angelo Sports followed around the Ram tight ends during the final practice of fall camp.

Payton Owen and Zane Hernandez gave some insight on what the tight ends are working on in camp. The Rams have 11 tight ends with three returners, four redshirts and four newcomers.

Hearn was a member of the scout team last season.

Hernandez played in seven games last year making two catches for 15 yards and one touchdown.

Mueller played in 10 games as a tight end last season.

English played at Converse Judson last season.

Hardy was a first team all-district selection at Creekview last year.

Josh Jacks, Freshman
Jacks was a second team all-state selection at Rock Christian Academy last season.

Jacob Reid, Freshman
Reid was a first team all-state offensive lineman at Wall last season.

"I want to see great footwork out of the tight ends. I want the group to be physical with our blocking and I want to be sound in our route running. We have to be detailed oriented as tight ends. " –  Anthony Lewis, graduate assistant.



The Rams will be off tomorrow for the first day of class and will return to practice on Tuesday afternoon. .
 
ASU Football Fall Camp: The Scrimmage
The Angelo State football team held its only scrimmage of the fall on Saturday evening at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.

The Rams will return to the field for practice No. 11 at 8 p.m. tomorrow night.
 

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Running Backs

Angelo Sports followed around the Ram running backs during practice No. 10 of fall camp.

Blake Smith and Trey Green gave some insight on what the running backs are working early on in camp. The Rams have seven running backs on the roster with two returners, two redshirts and three newcomers. .

Blake Smith, Senior
Smith was a second team All-LSC selection last year after rushing for 640 yards and scoring seven touchdowns.

Ryan Byrd, Junior
Byrd is a transfer from Fullerton College.

Trey Green, Sophomore
Green saw action in six games last year.

Adrian Dilworth, Redshirt Freshman
Dilworth redshirted last season.

Ronald Winston, Redshirt Freshman
Winston redshirted last season.

Lawon Carney, Freshman
Carney averaged 6.01 yards per carry and rushed for a career-high 22 yards at South Hills in West Covina, Calif.

Johnathan Jackson, Freshman
Jackson rushed for 928 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior at East Central in San Antonio.

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Defensive Line

Angelo Sports followed around the Ram defensive line during practice No. 8 and 9 of fall camp.

Clayton Callicutt and Matthew Gholston gave some insight on what the linebackers are working early on in camp. The Rams have 18 defensive linemen with 13 returners and five newcomers.

Ciuba was a member of the scout team last season.

Callicutt earned All-LSC honorable mention honors after playing in 11 games.

Coen transferred last spring from Sacramento City College.

Anderson played in nine games and started one while making 13 tackles last year.

John Siliga, Junior
Siliga transferred from San Bernardino Community College.

Hanson played 10 games on the defensive line and recorded two tackles.

Molden was a first team all-district selection at Cypress Ridge.

Rodriguez was a first team all-district pick at Memphis.

Brewer redshirted last season.

Matthew Gholston, Junior
Gholston started 11 games at defensive end and tied for the team lead with 7.0 sacks.

Played in 0 games and made 10 tackles.

Jeremy Johnson, Junior
Johnson played in three game before suffering a season-ending injury.

Jones made 90 tackles and was the district defensive MVP at Crowley last season.

Luersen was a member of the scout team last season.

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Offensive Line
Austin Landon and Steven Jackson gave some insight on what the offensive line has been working on in camp. The Rams have 16 offensive lineman on the roster with 11 returners and five newcomers.

Landin started two games and played in 10 as a junior.

Hamilton saw action in three games last season.

Huckaba started four games and played in all 11 games.

Wytaske earned all-district first team honors at Lyndon B. Johnson.

"I think consistency is the biggest thing for the offensive line. When those guys play together they know where everybody is going to take their step. I think our guys are very intelligent players and I have been very proud of their pre-snap reads. We want consistency every single play. It doesn't have to be the big special block but just getting a good quality block on every play. " Jay Eilers, assistant coach

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Defensive Backs
Angelo Sports followed around the Ram defensive backs during practice No. 5 and 6 of fall camp.

Ryan Clapsaddle and Jarred Ross gave some insight on what the defensive backs are working early on in camp. The Rams have 21 defensive backs on the roster with 15 returners and six newcomers.

Paul Mason, Senior
Mason recorded 12 tackles and one sack during the season, He also threw his first career touchdown pass on a fake field goal.

London Dial, Sophomore
Dial played in 10 games last season as a redshirt freshman.

Deion Hill, Sophomore
Hill played in two games last season as a redshirt freshman.

Jonathan Shannon, Sophomore
Shannon recorded 27 tackles with two interceptions as a true freshman. He returned one interception for a touchdown against McMurry.

Doug Elliot, Senior
Elliot started one game at defensive back and made 29 tackles during the season.

Fred Lawrence, Sophomore
Lawrence redshirted last season.

Jarrett Irving, Junior
Irving is a transfer from Houston. He played in four games as a backup defensive back.

English redshirted last season.

Richard Franklin, Sophomore
Franklin played in eight games and recorded five tackles last year as a true freshman.

McCoy started in 10 games at defensive back and made 27 tackles.

Wheeler is a transfer from West Texas A&M.

Ryan Clapsaddle, Junior
Clapsaddle was named All-LSC honorable mention after starting 10 games and finishing second on the team with 72 tackles.

Jarred Ross, Senior
Ross started 10 games at defensive back and recorded 37 tackles. He tied for the team lead with three interceptions.

Thomas played in four games and made two tackles last season.

Andy Duarte, Redshirt Freshman
Duarte redshirted last season.

Cameron Adkins, Freshman
Adkins made 48 tackles and was a second team all-district pick last year at Creekview.

Grant Aschenbeck, Freshman
Aschenbeck was named second team all-state after recording 105 tackles and five interceptions at East Bernard.

Gaylor was an all-district honorable mention selection as a senior at Cypress Ranch.

Quinn Haynes, Freshman
Haynes was the district's defensive back of the year at A&M-Consolidated last season.

Christian Taylor, Freshman
Taylor recorded 96 tackles as a senior at Mansfield Summit last season.

"Our emphasis for fall camp for the defensive backs is obviously not giving up big plays and to continually improve our technique we worked on this spring. We want to continue improving our man skills and we have some great athletes that are capable of that. We have seen great improvement so far and I have a lot of confidence in our group. I'm also excited in the depth which is something we haven't seen in years past.     – Will Wagner, head football coach

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Wide Receivers
Angelo Sports followed around the Ram wide receivers during practice No. 4 of fall camp.

Talon Smith and James Hurd gave some insight on what the wide receivers are working on in camp. The Rams have 14 receivers on the roster with seven returners with experience and seven newcomers.

Brett Rasberry, Junior
Rasberry caught eight passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns last season. He caught his first career touchdown against CSU-Pueblo.

Dakarai Pecikonis, Senior
Pecikonis sat out last season with an injury. He is currently No. 4 on the ASU career receiving yards list and is 690 yards away from breaking the record.

Grant Eubanks, Redshirt Freshman
Eubanks transferred from Texas Tech after redshirting in 2013.

Anthony Yancy, Senior
Yancy made 11 catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns last year.

Talon Smith, Junior
Smith started 10 games at wide receiver making 35 catches for 381 yards while scoring one touchdown.

Omigie sat out last season.

Austin Gibson, Freshman
Gibson played at Glen Rose last season.

Xavier Traylor, Senior
Traylor scored his first career touchdown against Texas A&M-Commerce last season. He made six catches for 65 yards during the season.

Castillo redshirted last season.

James Hurd, Senior
Hurd played in 10 games last year making seven catches for 92 yards.

Travier Jackson, Freshman
Jackson made 28 catches for 478 yards and four touchdowns last year at Red Oak.

Donovan Thompson, Freshman
Thompson caught 21 balls and 403 yards with five touchdowns as a senior at Westfield High.

Toliver played high school ball at Roscoe.

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Linebackers
Angelo Sports followed around the Ram linebackers during practice No. 3 of fall camp.

Blair Smith and Willie Brown gave some insight on what the linebackers are working early on in camp. The Rams have seven returning linebackers and two newcomers.

Ashton Thielke, Redshirt Freshman
Thielke redshirted last year after earning all-district first team honors at Pflugerville.

Willie Brown, Sophomore
Brown played in 11 games last season and recorded 11 tackles during the season.

Rush Seaver, Senior
Seaver was a first team All-LSC player after leading the Rams with 107 tackles.

Shonta Chaloux, Senior
Chaloux played in nine games last year.

Austin Sparks, Junior
Sparks has made 12 career starts during his two-year career and made seven tackles last year

Chas Freeman, Senior
Freeman returns to the field after sitting out last season.

Dekwan Dukes, Freshman
Dukes earned all-district honorable mention last season at Westfield High in Houston.

Blair Smith, Senior
Smith started 10 games last season and was fourth on the team with 59 tackles.

Legista Beckford, Freshman
Beckford recorded 41 tackles and four sacks last season for Cy Ranch High.

"We have been teaching technique since day one. We want to keep working on the little things in the drills and everything we have been teaching. I want them to get lined up, have a good stance and read keys for every play. When we do struggle it seems we are in panic mode and not lined up correctly. We are really back to the basics with the linebackers. We have two that are really good that have played a few years but we want the young guys to continue to learn. We want them to get to the football, wrap up and have fun doing it." – Jeff Girsch, defensive coordinator

ASU Football Fall Camp: The Quarterbacks
Angelo Sports followed around the Ram quarterbacks during practice No. 2 of fall camp. It was the first practice in shoulder pads for the Rams.

Warren Truesdale and Jacob Burtch gave some insight on what the quarterbacks are working early on in camp. The Rams have five quarterbacks on the roster with three returners and two freshmen.

Jacob Burtch – Redshirt Freshman
Burtch redshirted last season for the Rams. He was able to spend the summer on a mission trip in Uganda building water wells.

Devlin Isadore – Freshman
Isadore threw for 1,352 yards and 11 touchdowns at Aldine Eisenhower last year.

Warren Truesdale – Sophomore
Truesdale threw his first career touchdown last season against Black Hills State last season. He received a medical redshirt after an injury against Colorado-State Pueblo.

Kelton Versey – Freshman
Versey threw for 1,158 yards and 12 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,117 yard and 18 touchdowns at Lake Worh.

Kyle Washington – Junior
Washington was named the Lone Star Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 2,048 yard and 17 touchdowns and rushing for 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns.

"The biggest thing is we are going back to the basics. We are starting with base fundamentals, footwork and throwing mechanics. We have some guys that have been in the offense for a while but at the same time fundamentals are always key for quarterbacks." – Theron Aych, assistant head coach / offensive coordinator

ASU Football: Fall Camp Day One

A total of 107 student-athletes reported for the first practice of the 2014 ASU football season The Rams ran through conditioning drills before transitioning to position groups and team work. After team meetings this afternoon, the Rams will return to the field tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. for practice No. 2. The video below has head coach Will Wagner's thoughts on practice and highlights from the first day. The Rams will play the inaugural game at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field on Saturday, September 13 against Western State at 6 p.m.
