COMMERCE, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball couldn't overcome a Texas A&M-Commerce team that scored 40 points in the paint falling 80-57 at the Field House on Sunday afternoon.
The Belles (5-8, 0-3 LSC) struggled from the floor hitting only 27.0-percent (17-of-63) from the field. ASU was able to excel from behind the arc hitting 11 3-points on the night but committed 22 turnovers. Texas A&M-Commerce (7-5, 2-1 LSC) dominated in the paint with 40 points and hit 50.0-percent from the field. The Lions won the rebounding battle 42-40 and received 42 points from their bench.
Amanda Weaver and
KeAnna Kelly both scored career highs with 25 and 15 points, respectively. Weaver hit six 3-pointers on the night and led the Belles with eight rebounds. Kelly went 2-for-4 from behind the arc and 5-for-9 from the field.
The Lions got out to a quick start with a 20-5 run over the first nine minutes of the game as the Belles were forced into nine turnovers. Weaver hit one of four 3-pointers over the next four minutes to stop the run as ASU would outscore Texas A&M-Commerce 15-7 with all 15 points coming by 3-pointer.
Michelle Rosewell hit one 3-pointer while Weaver hit four over a four minute span.
The Belles continued chipping away at the Texas A&M-Commerce lead as they held the Lions to just four points over the final 5:19 of the half. ASU scored nine points including the first two-point basket of the game on a Kelly layup. The Belles cut the lead to 34-29 at the break.
The second half started at the two teams scored five points each over the first four minutes. Rosewell hit her second 3-pointer of the night and
Minja Savic hit two free throws. The Lions used a 14-5 run to take a 16 point lead at 55-39 with 11:33 to go in the game. Texas A&M-Commerce added to its lead with an 18-5 run to take a 29-point lead. The Belles wouldn't quit outscoring the Lions 13-7 over the final 3:44 for the final 80-57.
Five Lion players scored in double figures with Ashlee Johnson leading the way with 11 points. La'Tisha Hearne, Natalie Hessong, A, Tele-Leaupepe and Artaejah Gay each scored 10 points.
The Belles will play their third-straight LSC road game in Canyon on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against West Texas A&M.Â
