By Wes Bloomquist || wes.bloomquist@angelo.eduSAN ANGELO – Marsell Holden scored a career-best 26 points after hitting five 3-pointers and
Raijon Kelly added 22 points on a perfect shooting night to help lead No. 14/10-ranked Angelo State to a 112-81 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at the Junell Center.
The Rams (15-1, 3-0 LSC) matched the program record with their 10th straight victory by shooting a season-high 63.9 percent from the field and also went over 100 points for the fifth time this season. Â Angelo State is now 11-0 at home this season and is 22-2 inside the Junell Center over the past two seasons. The only other ASU teams in program history to score 100 points five times in a season were the 1993-94 and 2000-01 teams. ASU, which is averaging 93.9 points per game and leads the nation with a 30.2 scoring margin advantage, also had a season-high by shooting 68.8 percent on 3-pointers (11 of 16) and limited itself to 10 turnovers, including only one in the second half against the Greyhounds (7-10, 0-4 LSC).
"I thought this was a great team win with great balance from our starters and our bench players," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "Eastern is a very difficult team to guard because they are aggressive and attack the basket. We had to make some halftime adjustments and our guys did a great job in the second half. I was really proud of our team for only having one turnover in the second half. To do that in a college basketball game speaks volumes of how they are sharing the ball and how focused they were tonight."
Holden, who had scored a previous season-best 23 points against Arkansas-Monticello, went for the most points by a Ram this season after going 5 of 7 from beyond the arc along with hitting all five of his free throws. Holden was coming off a game against West Texas A&M where he went 0-for-5 on 3-pointers, but returned to form on Saturday and leads the Rams with 47 3-pointers this season and has hit five or more 3-pointers in four games this season.
"We have a lot of talent and can make plays in a lot of different ways," Holden said. "They found me open tonight and I was able to knock down a couple of shots."
Raijon Kelly also had a career night, scoring a season-high 22 points on a 7-for-7 shooting night. Kelly, who has scored in double digits in the past nine games, is shooting 62.4 percent from the field this season and also added four assists and five rebounds for the Rams on Saturday.
Chris Jones added 21 points, five assists and four rebounds and
Demario Mayfield went for 18 points and two steals. Mayfield and
Brentine Taylor led the Rams with seven rebounds in the game, while
Tommy Woolridge scored 10 points after hitting two 3-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Jones, who leads the Rams by shooting 64.4 percent this season, also leads the conference with 88 assists and 48 steals. Mayfield leads the Rams with 16.5 points per game and is second in the LSC behind only Darrell Williams who is at 17.6 points per game in his first season at Texas A&M-Commerce after transferring from Oklahoma State.
ASU led 52-40 at halftime and quickly turned the game into a blowout with a 12-5 run to open the second half. The Rams led by 20 for the first time at 78-58 on a Jones layup with 12 minutes to play and were up 86-60 when Jones hit a free throw which followed a layup and foul with 9:42 to play. The Rams cracked triple-digits for the fifth time this season when Woolridge hit a pair of free throws with four minutes to play.
Angelo State's previous best shooting performance came against McMurry when the team shot 66.1 percent. Against the Greyhounds, ASU went 39 of 61 from the field to go along with its 11 of 16 performance from beyond the arc. Holden led the 3-point attack with his five from beyond the arc, while Woolridge and Kelly each had two and Mayfield knocked down one 3-pointer. The Rams also were on point at the free-throw line at 79.3 percent (23 of 29) and owned the area around the basket with a 44-16 advantage in points scored in the paint.
The Rams, who are shooting 56.1 percent for the season and limiting the opposition to only 37.7 percent, will return to action on Wednesday against Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs (15-3, 4-0 LSC) are the only other undefeated team in conference play this season and are owners of an 11-game winning streak. MSU was off this weekend and will come into the game with a 9-0 record on its home court. While Wednesday's game in Wichita Falls loomed large on many minds, the Rams proved on Saturday that they were focused on ENMU and were not looking ahead.
"Every game in basketball is precious because there are only so many games on the schedule," Beard said. "You have to approach every game with importance and be ready for your opponent. I thought our staff did a great job of preparing our players, but more importantly, our players were really living in the present moment. We have a big game coming up on Wednesday at Midwestern State that is going to be a lot of fun, but we had to take care of our business tonight and we did."
