No. 5 Belles Extend Winning Streak to Four

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – The No. 5-ranked Angelo State women's soccer team nailed down a 2-0 shutout win over Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State on Friday night.

"I thought we played really well in the first half," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "In the second half, Midwestern pushed up a lot and caused some problems and I thought our defense did a good job of winning the aerial challenge."

The Belles are now 10-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in LSC play with 12 points. MSU fell to 2-2-1 in LSC play and 6-3-2 overall.

Two goals off the leg of junior forward Demi Tsambasis was all the Belles needed to secure a win against the Mustangs. Tsambasis scored her first goal in the fifth minute on an assist from Shay Williams. It came off a foul just outside the penalty area and Williams laid the free kick perfectly beyond the defenders to allow Tsambasis to push it past the goalkeeper.

"I told the team yesterday in training that I thought we could be dangerous on set pieces and Shay served up a beautiful ball that Demi was able to finish," McCorkle said.

The Belles took nine shots on the night with Tsambasis taking two shots. Sierra Anderson added four with two of them coming on goal. Tiffany Dang, Haley Mendel and Analise Watson also took one shot.

The Belles final goal came in the last minute of the match. Tsambasis' second goal came on an assist from Anderson.

"Sierra made a great run and took a shot, it got blocked and Demi was up there to finish," McCorkle said. "She was kind of out of position, but it ended up being the perfect position."

Tsambasis now has six goals on the season and Anderson has five assists. Tsambasis is tied for third in the conference in goals (6) with teammate Haley Mendel. Anderson has the second most assists in the LSC with five.

Once again, the defense was stellar. The Belles recorded their seventh shutout of the season and their fourth consecutive in the win. Goalkeeper Shantel Wittke made just three saves, but a crucial one late in the game to preserve the win.

"Shantel had a couple of fantastic saves tonight, one that she pushed over and then won that was an absolute bomb," McCorkle said. "If she doesn't make that save the game is tied with three minutes to go."

ASU has the rest of the weekend off, but will hit the road next weekend for two conference matches against Eastern New Mexico, Friday Oct. 16 and Sunday Oct. 18 versus West Texas A&M.
