Rams Down Schreiner to Remain Undefeated

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team remained undefeated with a 108-65 win over Schreiner and topped 100 points for the third straight game.

The Rams continued their undefeated run improving to 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in front of its home crowd. ASU has defeated its last two opponents by a margin of at least 40 points. Schreiner (0-2) remained winless on the season with the loss.

"I felt like Tuesday night we got better and tonight we took a step back defensively, Angelo State head men's basketball coach Cinco Boone said. "I thought we should have played harder in the second half defensively. A good team win with everybody getting minutes. It is good to see that we got to the foul line and knocked down perimeter shots. Hopefully we come out tomorrow and get better defensively."

The Rams outscored the Mountaineers 42-24 in the paint and capitalized on 20 turnovers converting them to 30 points. As a team, ASU shot over 70% from the foul line (75%) for the third straight game and hit 57.76% of its field goals.  Once again ASU did a tremendous job distributing the ball for a team total of 26 assist. This is the second game within a week that the team has recorded a excess of 25 assists.

"I am pleased with our assists," Boone said. "We had 26 tonight and 34 on Tuesday. We are hoping that continues throughout the season. That will be a key in tomorrow's game if we can continue to share the ball."

Leading ASU's high scoring offense against the Mountaineers, Tre Bennett racked up a season high 23 points while shooting .545 from the field and .875 from the line. Adding to his season highs he also sunk four of eight 3-pointers which gave him a .500 percentage from beyond the arch. The point guard help facilitate the team distributing the ball for four assists on the night.

Shelton Boykin checked in at third on the team with an 18 point performance. He also contributed five assists and nine total rebounds, eight of which were defensive, to lead the team in the rebound category.

"They are both so talented," Boon said of Boykin and Bennet. "They are able to do things off the bounce and create their own shots. They can do it inside the offense which helps. Tre was able to get some clean looks tonight and he hit them."

Senior Stedman Allen hit double-digit points in his third consecutive game. The forward scored 21 points including eight of nine from the field and five of six from the charity stripe.

Shaquan Rhoades distributed the ball for a squad leading six assists. He also picked up two defensive rebounds, a block and a steal. Topping off the offensive performers of the game, Prince Foster had a team high four offensive rebounds and totaled seven rebounds for the game. He also recorded five assists and a steal.

Omari Gudul and Napoleon Onyeje were top defensive performers on match-up. The 6'-10" Gudul led the team with three blocks and was a perfect five of five on field goals. While, Onyeje marked a team leading three steals while he also added three assists.

Gudul would get the Rams started in the first half with an authoritative dunk that would set the tone for the rest of the night.  With the score 28-16, ASU engineered a 17-5 run that featured 3-pointers from Gustavs Puhovs and Quay King and seven consecutive made free throws. This would start to put the game out of reach for SU and the Rams would enter the half with a 20 point lead and a score of 50-30.

In the second half ASU would not let off the gas pedal and increased its lead to 30 lining up a 15-5 run that included a pair of threes from Bennett and two fast breaks by Allen. The Rams would maintain its momentum though the rest of the half eventually pushing its leads to 45 over Schreiner. Gudul would add one last block to cap off the night for him and the Rams with a final score of 108-65.

Angelo State takes the court again Saturday, November 21 at 7 pm to close out the Ed Messbarger Classic against St. Edward's. The match up with the Hilltoppers will be a battle of two undefeated teams each with four wins under their belt.

"St. Edward's returns four starters and a lot of guys who got experience last season," added Boone. "They have a good offense and play well together. We will have to lock in and play great defense because they will be the most talented offensive team we have seen this season."
