Belles Improve to 2-0 with 85-47 Win over Western New Mexico

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 85-47 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Belles (2-0) hit 44.6-percent from the field while limiting the Mustangs (2-2) to just 31.1-percent. WNMU committed 19 turnovers that turned into 18 points for ASU. Angelo State outscored WNMU in the paint (36-22) off the bench (28-17) and held a 49-39 rebounding advantage over the Mustangs.

"The hot start was great because it put us in our press where we could play with a lot of defensive energy," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "I loved that we hit those early shots because it allowed us to extend the defense. Our goal was to hold to 48 points for the game. I'm excited we accomplished out goal of limiting them to just 47 but we wouldn't have been able to do that if we didn't hit early shots."

Taylor Dorsey had the hot hand for the second straight game scoring 22 points while 10 other Belles were able to score. Twelve of her points came by way of the 3-point line as the junior hit four including three in the first three minutes of the game. The junior scored at least 20 points for the second straight game and also recorded five rebounds and four assists. Jasmine Prophet scored a season high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds and Dimalises Rivera added 12 points. It is the second straight game in double digits for Rivera. Lexi Murphy scored nine points and Brea Mitchell tallied eight points. KeAnna Kelly led the team with six assists.

The Belles came out on fire in the first quarter. Dorsey opened the game with three straight 3-pointers that sparked a 16-2 run to open the game. The 3-pointers continued with Christian Robinson and KeAnna Kelly each hitting a trey in the first five minutes of the game. Robinson's three extended the lead to 21-6. Dorsey opened the second quarter with a jumper and the Bellle's defense took over in the second after allowing six points through the first five minutes. Up 33-18, ASU went on a 17-2 over the final 4:49 to take a 50-20 advantage into the break.  ASU would push the lead to 37 in the second half including 43 at the end of the third quarter on a jumper by Natalie Quesnel. Western New Mexico would outscore ASU 13-8 in the fourth quarter to make the final 85-47.

"One of the things I like but we still need to work on is our defensive rotation," Baker said. "It is so much better but we have a long ways to go. Our first game we had very little first rotation and this game we had some third rotation. We have a long way to go but I saw us get better in that today."

ASU will play Missouri S&T and Arkansas-Monticello in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic in San Antonio on Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov.28.
