CORPUS CHRISTI – The Angelo State women's basketball team took down Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 85-80 in an exhibition game in Corpus Christi on Friday night.
The Belles hit 47.6-percent from the field and drained 11 three pointers. The Islanders outrebounded ASU 46-35 including 22 on the offensive end. The Angelo State defense blocked a season high seven and scored 23 points off 18 turnovers.
"We were very resilient tonight and fought off a tremendous momentum swing," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We were tough mentally and physically. This was a great win for our program and a huge building block for the rest of the season."
Four Belles scored in double figures with Taylor Dorsey scoring a game high 25 points. Jasmine Prophet added a season high 15 points while KeAnna Kelly and Brea Mitchell contributed 11 and 10, respectively.
The Belles took a 20 point lead at 66-46 on a Dorsey jumper at the 1:12 mark in the third quarter. The Islander's wouldn't lay down putting together a 19-2 run to cut ASU's lead to 68-66 with 6:38 to go in the fourth quarter. KeAnna Kelly hit one of the team's 11 three pointers moments later to propelled the Belles to a 10-3 run and a 78-69 advantage. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would not get closer than five over the final 3:56 as ASU secured the final 85-80 victory.
ASU excelled in the first half taking a 45-28 advantage in at the half. The Belles held the Islanders to just 36.7-percent from the field in the first half and forced 13 turnovers.
The win and player stats won't count due to the game being an exhibition. The Belles will return to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center this Sunday, Dec. 14 for a 4 p.m. matchup with St. Mary's.Â
