SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team lost 91-71 to Wayland Baptist on Saturday evening at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Belles (6-3) struggled from the field for the second straight game hitting only 34.2-percent from the field. Wayland Baptist (6-4) was on fire hitting 55.6-percent from the field and 54.5-percent from behind the arc. The Flying Queens hit 12 three pointers and outrebounded the Belles 43-39. ASU was able to score 22 points off 21 turnovers.
Taylor Dorsey and Brea Mitchell led the Belles with 18 points each. Jasmine Prophet scored in double figures for the second straight game adding 11 points. The junior also grabbed a team high nine rebounds.
The Belles had a slow start to the game going down 9-2 through the first three minutes of the game. A pair of free throws by Lexi Murphy cut the deficit to 9-4 but WBU went on a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 18-6. The Flying Queens continued to push the lead to 15 at the end of the first taking a 25-11 advantage. ASU hit only 21.1-percent from the field in the first quarter.
ASU came out in the third quarter and a 3-pointer by Murphy with 7:16 to go in the second quarter made it 31-18 WBU. A layup by Natalie Quesnel dropped it to 11 but the Flying Queens hit one of 12 three pointers for a 34-20 advantage. A quick 6-2 run capped off by a jumper in the paint by Mitchell made the deficit just eight points at 34-26. WBU pushed the lead back to 12 but Kiahna Thompson drained a 3-pointer and another jumper by Mitchell cut it to 39-31 at the break.
KeAnna Kelly opened the second half with a 3-pointer for ASU to bring the score to 41-34 and Mitchell hit another jumper to cut the lead to six at 43-37. The Flying Queens hit another 3-pointer to slow the Belles run. Down 54-43, ASU's Dorsey would try to bring the Belles back. She would score five of the next seven ASU's points to cut the lead to 56-50. WBU would score six of the final seven points to take a 62-51 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was all Wayland Baptist. The Flying Queens sank 78.6-percent from the field and outscored ASU 29-20. The Belles shot 26.1-percent from the field in the fourth and was 0-for-7 from the three point line.
Wayland Baptist had four players score in double figures. Shayla Monreal, Shawna Monreal and Nina Sato each scored 20 points and Stephanie Afunugo added nine points.
The Belles will play their final game of 2015 against McMurry on Thursday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
