No. 7 Rams Charge Past NNMC for Eighth Straight Win

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 7 Angelo State men's basketball team extended its win streak to eight with a 105-68 win over Northern New Mexico on Wednesday, December 2 at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Rams moved to 8-0 on the season for only the second time in ASU history since 1964 that a men's basketball team has begun the season with such a record. Tthe last time it happened was in 2013 season under head coach Chris Beard. The NNMC Eagles drop to 4-5 on the year.

For the fourth time this season the Rams racked up over 100 points in a game. ASU had five players score in double figures on the night with the bench accounting for 59 of the 105 points. As a team the Rams shot 51.4 percent from the field and 82.8 percent from the free throw line.

"I thought the team came out focused," said ASU head men's basketball coach Cinco Boone. "The challenge was one-on-one defense and I thought they did a good job. It was good to see that they came out and played well. It was also good to get a lot of the guys some good minutes and hopefully we can continue to build upon it."

ASU started the game holding the Northern New Mexico offense scoreless for the first six minutes. The Rams would not look back jumping out 8-0 and never relinquished the lead. Up 13-5, Tre Bennett would roll in a layup which was followed by Quay King dropping in a pair of shots from beyond 3-point range. This would kick off a 13-1 run by Angelo State that would give them a 20 point lead with the score 26-6.  Bennett would return to float in two foul shots to give the team its biggest lead to that point and take them into the half with an advantage of 47-22.

The second half would be much of the same with the Rams going on a 12-2 run at the 14:32 mark of the second half that would increase its lead to 34 points. The run saw four points each from both Shaquan Rhoades and Stedman Allen and ended on a jumper from Boykin to place the score at 70-36. Gustavs Puhovs would launch a 3-pointer from long range to push the score over the 100 point barrier. A Prince Foster jumper from the paint and a Napoleon Onyeje Jr. free throw would close out game for the Rams with a 105-68 score.

Boykin led the scoring for the Rams with 17 points. The junior has scored double-digits in every game this season. Against the Eagles he was 7-of-13 from the field and two-of-two from beyond the arch.

Puhovs recorded a season high 15 points launching six total shots from 3-point range sinking a team high four 3-pointers.  He went 5-of-7 from the field and 1-of-2 from the line. The junior pulled down three boards and added a block to his final numbers. DeVonte' Pratt (12), Bennett (13) and Rhoades (10) rounded out the group with double figure points. Pratt's 12 points marked a season high for the junior guard. He recorded his first block of the season. Both Bennett and Rhoades also marked season highs with two steals each.

Thomas Tshikaya and King made major contributions to the ASU defense. Tshikaya was the only Ram to pull down double-digit boards (10) on Wednesday night. He scored six points and tallied a block and a steal for the night. King, who made his first start, recorded the most minutes on the team. He topped the Rams with a season high three steals adding nine points and an assists to the mix.
