CANYON – The No. 11 Angelo State softball team split its final games of the WT Woodward Classic with an 11-0 win over Chadron and a 7-6 loss to Metro State on Sunday.
The Rambelles (11-1) scored a total of 17 runs on the day off 25 hits.
Kenedy Urbany led ASU at the plate with a .667 average. The sophomore went hit a triple while scoring three runs and driving home two RBIs. Three home runs were hit by
Camry Weinheimer,
Lauryn Donnelly and
Kelly Johnson.
"It was a great start to the day with scoring six run in the first inning against Chadron State," ASU head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "We were able to get a lot of playing time from our roster players and they were great once again. Three home runs from your bench is always exciting to see. We gave game two away. Five errors led to all of Metro State's runs. We battled at the plate and took the lead until we had two errors in the sixth which led to four runs. We have to be able to play defense in cold weather."
ASU jumped on Chadron State early in the first game as the first six batters got a hit and scored.
Rachel Moore and
Darian Dunn each recorded an RBI before Weinheimer hit a three-run home run to right center to put ASU up 6-0. It was the first career home run for the freshman.
The Rambelles added two more runs in the second with two solo home runs. Donnelly hit her first career home run at ASU and Johnson added her second home run in as many days to extend the lead to 8-0.
Urbany kept Chadron State off the board. The sophomore only allowed two hits and earned her second shutout of the season. The Helotes native is now 6-0 on the season with a 1.27 earned-run average. She only allowed three runs the entire weekend.
The final three runs of the game came in the fourth inning. Urbany brought home Johnson with a triple to left field and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Weinheimer.
Tina Cisneros, who reached on a triple, would score on a double by
Amber Rendon.
ASU recorded a season-high 14 hits and 11 RBIs in the game.
The Rambelles had a 7-3 lead in the sixth inning before errors cost ASU four runs and the game.
Metro State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring three runs, two earned, in the first inning off freshman
Brandy Marlett. One error in the inning allowed two unearned run to cross.
ASU started to chip away at the lead with a run in the bottom of the first.
Madison Greenwell singled up the middle and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dunn.
The Rambelles had a big third inning with four runs on five hits. A leadoff walk by Hill and a sacrifice bunt by Greenwell had Hill in scoring position.
Micherie Koria singled up the middle to score Hill. The senior stole her 10
th base of the season and would score on a single by
Rachel Moore. Urbany hit another single up the middle to bring home Moore and
Lanie Robinson's ground up the middle gave ASU a 5-3 lead after three inning.
Marlett settled down after the first only allowing three hits from the second through the fifth innings.
Urbany recorded her second hit of the game with a single to the shortstop. Rendon came on the punch run and scored on an infield single by Hill. Granado tried to score on the play but was thrown out in a rundown.
Errors again cost ASU in the sixth. A ground out and a walk brought up Metro State's top of the lineup. The Rambelles committed back-to-back errors before a three-run home run by Mary Towner put Metro State on top 7-6.
The Rambellese would threaten in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners at first and third but Metro State's Kenzie Mattey got a strikeout and a pop-up to end the game.
Marlett was credited with her first loss of the season. She gave up nine hits but struck out five.
The Rambelles return home to Mayer Field to host UT-Permian Basin for a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 22 Â at 1 p.m.
