Belles Upset No. 17/24 Midwestern State

SAN ANGELO – A steal by Michelle Rosewell with less than three seconds left in the game secured a 55-53 upset win for the Angelo State women's basketball team over No. 17/24 Midwestern State on Wednesday at the Junell Center.   

The Belles (8-16, 3-11 LSC) won their second straight home game by limiting the Mustangs (19-5, 10-4 LSC) to just 33.9-percent from the floor. ASU made 55-percent from the field, the highest percentage of the season, and 50-percent from the 3-point line. MSU outrebounded ASU 44-26 including 23 on the offensive end. The Belles scored 32 points in the paint and received 17 points from its bench. 

Midwestern State's Dianna Jones hit two free throws after being fouled in the lane to make it 53-52 ASU with 17.2 to play. MSU fouled Shanna Taylor but the junior couldn't convert on two free throws. Jones again drove the lane on the ensuing possession with 10.6 to play but missed a contested layup. Diamalises Rivera grabbed the rebound with 3.3 second to go and hit one of two free throws before Rosewell's steal.

Rivera scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. KeAnna Kelly added 13 points while hitting three 3-pointers.

Midwestern State jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in the first six minutes of the first half. The Belles stormed back with a 13-4 run over the next 5:04 to take an 18-15 advantage. Kelly hit a 3-pointer to start the run while Minja Savic added six of the 13 points.

Keva Raiford capped off the run with a jumper and put ASU up 20-16 seconds later with another jumper with 8:26 to go in the first half. A quick 7-4 run by MSU cut ASU's deficit to 24-23 but Taylor hit a 3-pointer. Savic hit a jumper after a missed MSU bucket to extend the lead to 29-24 with 2:19 to go. Kelly hit her second 3-pointer of the half to give ASU a 32-25 lead at the break.

Rivera led ASU with nine points while Kelly and Savic each scored eight points. Savic's eight points is a new career high for the junior.

The Belles scored four of the first six points of the second half to take its largest lead of 36-27. The Mustangs used its speed to cut a nine point deficit into a 42-38 lead with a 15-2 run. ASU was held scoreless for 2:58 during the run.  

ASU returned the favor by holding the Mustangs scoreless over the next 4:15 of the game and tying the game at 43 with Kelly's third 3-pointer of the game. MSU missed four shots and were forced into five turnovers by the Belles during the drought.

Leila Jdily-Ezzad hit a free throw and followed it up with a jumper during a 7-4 ASU run that put the Belles up 50-47 with 4:03 to play. Jdily-Ezzad continued scoring with a layup in the lane but Andrea Carter hit two free throws to make it a one point game with less than two minutes to play. MSU only hit 10-of-23 free throws in the game with seven coming in the second half. Rivera hit a jumper with 1:48 to go to give the Belles a 54-51 advantage. The Mustangs would miss five shots in the final 2:16 of the game. 

Shatoia Gober was one of two Mustangs to record a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carter was the second with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The win over No. 17/24 Midwestern State is the first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 25 Tarleton State last season. It is also the first win at home over MSU since 2011.

The Belles will return to action this Saturday against Cameron at 4 p.m. in Lawton, Okla.
