No. 11 Rambelles Earn Two Run-Rule Victories at George McCorkle Challenge

SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State softball team opened its season with a pair of run-rule victories over Colorado School of Mines 11-0 and Texas A&M-International 10-2 on the first day of the George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles (2-0) combined for 21 hits and 21 runs in the two games. Angelo State is now 12-2 in season openers and 13-1 in home openers since 2002. A total of seven players recorded at least one RBI and 12 crossed the plate for a run. Sophomore Kenedy Urbany, the winning pitcher against Colorado School of Mines, led ASU at the plate going 4-of-6 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs during the two games.

"It was a great way to break in the new remodeled Mayer Field," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We had two great pitching performances from Kenedy (Urbany) and Brandy (Marlett). I was proud that we showed good early season discipline and hit some balls hard."

In the first game, Colorado School of Mines put two runners on in the top of the first with only one out on pitcher Urbany. A wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. The sophomore was able get a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam.

The Rambelle bats quickly got the lead. Madison Greenwell led off the game and her career with a single to right field. A walk to Darian Dunn put runners and first second. Urbany would help her own cause with a double to right center for a 2- 0 advantage. Tina Cisneros would single through the right side to score Urbany for a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Urbany would put the Orediggers down in order in the second and third to keep CSM (0-1) off the board. ASU added an unearned run bottom of the second. Hill was walked and stole second base to bring up Greenwell. The freshman laid a bunt down and the third baseman threw it away to score Hill.

The bats added more insurance in the bottom of the third inning. Cisneros recorded her second RBI of the game with a double over the centerfielder's head. Greenwell scored Ambra Hill and later scored on a single by Dunn to extend the lead to 8-0

The only other hit the Orediggers would get was in the top of the fourth inning. A runner reached on an error and Sonoma Toots hit a single to center. Urbany, who recorded the second shutout of her career, struck out four batters and only walked one in five innings of work.

Cisneros tied her career high with four RBIs in a game in the fourth. After a walk by Megan Granado, Cisneros blasted a home run to right center for a 10-0 advantage. Lanie Robinson tacked on the final run scoring on a double by Lauryn Donnelly on her first collegiate hit to secure the five inning run-rule victory.

In game two, the Rambelles faced their first deficit of the season. Texas A&M-International (1-3) scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning. ASU responded with two outs in the bottom of the first. Dunn would single and score on a double by Urbany to tie the game at one.

Brandy Marlett made her first collegiate start and settled into a grove after the first inning. After the run scored, Marlett struck out the last two batters of the first and the last two batters of the second inning.

ASU jumped on the Dustdevils in the second again with two outs. Camry Weinheimer reached on a fielder's choice but the inning looked to be over with two outs. Greenwell stepped up and singled to the shortstop. Koria hit a single to score Weinheimer and Dunn scored Koria and Greenwell . The hits continued with a double by Rachel Moore.

Urbany capped off the inning with her first home run of the season over the right center fence to make it 7-1 after two innings.

The Dustdevils scored another unearned run in the third to trim the Rambelles lead to 7-2. Marlett wouldn't allow a run the rest of the way. She recorded her first career win and only allowed two hits with both coming in the top of the third. The Henderson, Nev. native struck out six and only allowed two walks.

Urbany continued her monster game in the bottom of the fifth. Moore led the inning off with a walk and Brooke Mangold came into pinch run. Urbany made it an easy run as she hit her second home run of the game to right center. Ciara Sheppard ended the game by run-rule with a single that scored Hill in the fifth.

"Thanks to all the fans that came out as we opened up the newly renovated facility," Scott said. "We are looking forward to an even bigger crowd tomorrow to enjoy the beautiful 80 degree weather and Rambelle softball."

Scott is now one victory away from 600 career victories and two away from 500 at Angelo State. The Rambelles will play Texas A&M-International at 12:45 p.m. and St. Edward's at 3:15 p.m.
