SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State softball team earned a 5-1 win over Texas A&M-International to give head coach
Travis Scott his 600
th career victory and followed it up with a 3-0 defeat of St. Edward's for Scott's 500
th win at Angelo State on day two of the George McCorkle Challenge held at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (4-0) pitching duo of
Kenedy Urbany and
Brandy Marlett limited Texas A&M-International and St. Edward's to just four hits and one run. Urbany led the offense with four hits and two RBIs and
Rachel Moore recorded two RBIs.
"We continued to play good solid softball today," Scott said. "Kenedy (Urbany) had another strong outing in game one and we did what we needed to do offensively. Ciara (Sheppard), Lanie (Robinson) and Darian (Dunn) had great days and I thought we played outstanding defense as a team."
The Rambelles once again faced a first inning deficit against Texas A&M-International (0-5). Urbany gave up a walk and two singles and one run in the first. ASU looked like they would go scoreless in the bottom of the first until Texas A&M-International threw the ball away to allow
Darian Dunn to reach second base. Moore capitalized on the mistake and hit her first home run of the season to left field to put the Rambelles on top 2-1 after one.
Urbany gave up one hit in the second to the second batter of the inning but settled in retiring 12-straight batters before giving up a walk in the sixth. Sheppard singled to lead off the fourth and Brook Mangold, who entered as a pinch runner, scored on a RBI double by
Madison Greenwell for a 3-1 lead after four innings.
The Rambelles tacked on two more runs in the sixth. ASU had runners at first and second after a leadoff walk from Sheppard and
Lanie Robinson was hit by a pitch. The runners advanced on a sacrifice by Greenwell and both would score on the next play.
Micherie Koria reached on a fielder choice but the Dustdevils threw the ball away for their second error of the game that would score pinch runner
Kylie Love from second for the final 5-1 score.
Urbany allowed only one run on three hits with two walks in 7.0 innings. The Helotes native has only given up six hits and one run in two starts this season.
The win made Scott the 27
th active coach and the 48
th coach all-time in Division II to reach the 600 career plateau.
'The 600 hundred wins is something I am proud of," Scott said. "I am proud to be coaching and have coached some outstanding players. I hope each and every one of them takes pride in this accomplishment with me."
Game two had freshman pitcher
Brandy Marlett shine in front of the home crowd. The Henderson, Nev., native only allowed one over the minimum in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out seven St. Edward's (2-4) batters and didn't give up a walk. The only Hilltopper hit came in the fourth on a soft roller in the infield.
"Brandy (Marlett) was lights out in game two and we needed her to be against a team like St. Edward's," Scott said. "SEU's Sarah Debrow was able to keep us off balance the entire game and kept us off of the board when we had some chances."
The freshman now is 2-0 on the season with one shutout and 13 strikeouts. Marlett has only allowed three hits and given up two walks to go along with a 0.00 earned-run average in 12.0 innings.
All of the Rambelles run came in the first inning. Greenwell led off the game with an infield single. Koria and Dunn laid down back-to-back bunts for hits to load the bases. Two outs later, Urbany stepped to the plate and singled to left field to bring home Greenwell and Koria.
Megan Granado recorded her first hit and RBI of the season on a double that scored Dunn from second base for the 3-0 advantage.
The win gave Scott his 500
th victory as coach of the Rambelles. During his tenure at ASU, Scott has won one national championship, five NCAA Division II South Central Regional titles and five LSC Championships.
The Rambelles will play Colorado School of Mines at 9:30 a.m. and face Northwestern Oklahoma State in the tournament finale at 4:30 p.m. at Mayer Field.
