No. 7 Rams extend program-record winning streak to 16 games with 20-point conference win over ENMU

PORTALES, N.M. – Demario Mayfield had 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help lead the No. 7-ranked Angelo State Rams to a 69-49 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at the Greyhound Arena.

The Rams (21-1, 9-0 LSC) extended their program-record winning streak to 16 games after shooting over 60 percent in a game for the sixth time and limited the Greyhounds (7-15, 0-9 LSC) to a 35.3 field-goal percentage. It was the 13th time this season that the Rams have limited their opponent below 40-percent shooting, including the past three games.

"Our team defended well tonight," ASU head coach Chris Beard said. "Eastern is a difficult team to guard because they have multiple playmakers. I thought we were patient and disciplined with our defense."

ASU, which led 33-27 at halftime after shooting 61.9 percent on 21 first-half shots, finished the game shooting 26 of 43 from the field and owned the area around the basket with a 36-14 scoring advantage in the paint. Mayfield, who went 8 of 10 from the field, had 12 of his 22 points in the first half and has now scored 20 or more points in eight games, including scoring 20 points on Wednesday in ASU's win over West Texas A&M. He is leading the Rams with 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season, while he's also at 93 assists through the first 22 games. Chris Jones added 16 points and two assists in the win over ENMU, while Marsell Holden went 3-for-6 on 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Raijon Kelly contributed seven points and four rebounds and DeQuavious Wagner had five points. Jones went 7 of 8 from the field and was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. ASU's leader with 111 assists and 56 steals, Jones is second in the LSC with a 63.4 field-goal percentage and is averaging 15.7 points per game.

The Rams swept the season-series against the Greyhounds after also earning at 112-81 win on Jan. 17 at the Junell Center. ASU is now 7-1 away from San Angelo this season and 5-0 on the home courts of LSC opponents.

Angelo State will return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Tarleton State in Stephenville. The Texans (20-2, 7-2 LSC) are on a seven-game winning streak after earning a 58-53 win over Midwestern State on Wednesday in Wichita Falls and then taking down Cameron on Saturday. ASU has lost its last 11 games in Stephenville dating back to a 64-47 win on Feb. 8, 2001. The Rams earned a 78-60 win over the Texans at the Junell Center on Jan. 7 to start conference play this season.

"We have a lot of respect for Tarleton," Beard said. "They are well-coached and very talented. Our players are looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to compete with a very good team."
