Marlett’s No-Hitter Completes No. 6 Rambelles Sweep Over No. 5 St. Mary’s

SAN ANGELO –Brandy Marlett threw the eighth no-hitter in Angelo State program history as the No. 6 Rambelles completed a doubleheader sweep of No. 5 of St. Mary's on Wednesday at Mayer Field.

"It was two great wins with two great pitching performances," Angelo State head softball coach said. "All four starters for both teams pitched extremely well. For Kenedy (Urbany) to outlast Vianna (Guiterriez) and Brandy was just amazing in game two. Micherie made one of the best catches I've ever seen and to save the no-hitter and a run. It was two great wins and I am extremely proud of our team and the way they competed. We are looking forward to another great weekend against a top opponent."

The Rambelles moved to 20-2 overall with a 3-2 win in 10 innings in game one and a 4-0 victory in game two. The Rattlers fall to 17-5 and were limited to just six hits and two runs.

Marlett's no-hitter is the first since April Haywood no-hit UTPB in 2009. The freshman struck out seven batters and walked four for her 10th victory of the season. Marlett sat the Rattlers down in order in four of the seven innings.

Micherie Koria provided a highlight reel catch in the top of the third inning. St. Mary's had a runner on second base after a walk and sacrifice bunt. A ball was hit to the left center gap and Koria laid out to make the catch to keep the no-hitter alive.

The Rattlers put runners on base again in the sixth as Marlett allowed three walks in the inning. St. Mary's had runners at second and third with one out after a wild pitch. Taylor Vidrine walked to load the bases. Marlett showed resolve by striking out the Rattler's cleanup hitter to get out of the inning.

The Rambelles offense was held in check throughout game two, leaving eight runners on base until the sixth inning. Tina Cisneros led the inning off with a bang as she crushed a ball over the left field fence for the first run of the game. A two-out rally started with back-to-back hits from Camry Weinheimer and Ciara Sheppard. Ambra Hill scored on a throwing error after Sheppard singled to make it 2-0. Madison Greenwell singled to keep the inning alive and put runners at the corners. Koria stepped up to the plate and singled to right field to score both Sheppard and Greenwell for a 4-0 advantage heading into the top of the seventh.

Marlett came out and hit the first batter of the inning. She forced a come backer for the first out and struck out the next batter looking for her seventh strikeout of the game. The freshman stepped up and got a fly ball to centerfield to end the game to complete the no-hitter.

Game one showcased two outstanding pitching performances by Kenedy Urbany and Vianna Gutierrez that lasted 10 innings. It was the first extra-inning game since facing St. Mary's in the South Central Regional.

St. Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Gutierrez.

The Rambelles responded in the bottom of the third inning. Koria led the inning off with a walk and stole second base. Two outs later, Rachel Moore drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Tina Cisneros reached base on an error by the second baseman to score Koria. A single by Megan Granado plated Moore to make it 2-1 after three innings.
Kenedy Urbany held the Rattlers scoreless until the fifth inning. A single was followed by a field error to tie the game at two in the fifth inning.

After the fifth, the two teams combined for only four hits through the next five innings. St. Mary's had runners in scoring position in the sixth and eighth inning but Urbany forced ground outs to end the innings.

Urbany stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to lead off the 10th inning. The game looked to be going into the 11th until Granado hit a ball down the right field line over the bag.  Urbany, who threw a season-high 10.0 innings, rounded third and slid home for the win.

The sophomore won her 10th game of the year after limiting St. Mary's to 2 runs on six hits. She struck out two and only walked three batters.

The Rambelles will face the defending national champion No. 1 West Texas A&M in a pivotal LSC series starting on Friday at 5 p.m. at Mayer Field.
