No. 1 West Texas A&M Takes Two from No. 6 Rambelles

SAN ANGELO – No. 1 West Texas A&M swept the No. 6 Angelo State softball team in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Friday night at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles (20-4, 5-3 LSC) were held to just a combined two hits and one run in the doubleheader. West Texas A&M (19-2, 6-0 LSC) racked up 21 hits and 23 runs.

After a blowout loss in game one, the Rambelles turned to Brandy Marlett to keep West Texas A&M off balanced. The freshman did just that striking out a career-high 10 batters during the game.
WT would up a runner at second in the first and second innings but was unable to score off Marlett.

The Lady Buffs threatened again in the third leaving a runner stranded at third but Marlett struck out back-to-back batters to get out of the inning.

The fourth inning was the deciding inning. After a single, Allie Cranfill put a double into the left center gap to score the runner from first base. A single two batters later put WT up 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Micherie Koria led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and was sacrificed over by Megan Granado. A single by  Tina Cisneros put runners on the corners. Kenedy Urbany hit a grounder to third base and Koria was able to score on the throw to first to cut the deficit to 2-1.

WT wouldn't put a runner on base in the final three innings of the game. The Rambelles had a runner at second in the sixth and seventh inning but was unable to tie the game.

Marlett pitched a complete game only allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits. The 10 strikeouts is the most since Mary Kate McKay struck out 10 Central Oklahoma batters in 2012.

The first game was all Lady Buffs. West Texas A&M scored five runs in the first and six runs in the second. The third was the biggest inning tacking on nine runs before the final run in the top of the fourth. WT hit five home runs in the game.

The Rambelles got down early and couldn't recover. WT's Rita Hokianga threw a no-hitter in the win. Kenedy Urbany was credited with just her second loss of the season.

The two teams will complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Mayer Field starting at 1 p.m.
