No. 6 Rambelles Split Doubleheader with No. 1 West Texas A&M

SAN ANGELO – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team split its series finale doubleheader with No. 1 West Texas A&M falling in the first game 4-2 and winning the finale 1-0 at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles (21-5, 6-4 LSC) held West Texas A&M (20-3, 7-1 LSC) to just four runs and seven hits combined. ASU was able to register 12 hits and three runs in Saturday's doubleheader. After the first game of the series, the Rambelle pitching staff limited the Lady Buffs to just 13 hits and six runs.

"Proud of the way we bounced back and had a chance to win both games," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Kenedy (Urbany) was great and Brandy (Marlett) was simply fun to watch. A 3-3 week while playing St. Mary's and West Texas A&M isn't bad but we know that we left opportunities to win three of four from WT. Give them credit but it was two of the best teams in the country getting after it."

The Rambelles turned to Brandy Marlett in the circle to try and salvage a doubleheader split after falling 4-2 in game one of the double header.

The freshman had to battle through adversity in the first inning. The Lady Buffs had runners at first and third with two outs. Marlett got Lacey Taylor to ground out and end the inning.

ASU took its first lead of the series in the top of the first inning. Darian Dunn drew a one out walk and went to second on a fielder's choice by Tina Cisneros. Kenedy Urbany stroked a single up the middle to bring home Dunn to put the Rambelles up 1-0.

Marlett took over the rest of the way striking out a career-high 11 batters only one day after striking out 10 batters. She is the second Rambelle in program history to record double-digit strikeouts in back-to-back outings. Claudia Lopez accomplished the feat twice during the 2004 season. The only hits came in the second and fourth innings.

The Lady Buffs tried to make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners at first and second. Marlett struck out Erwin for the third time to end the game and give ASU a 1-0 victory. It is the first time WT has been shutout since 2013. The freshman is now 11-2 on the season.

Game one was another pitching duel as the two teams combined for six runs on 12 hits. West Texas A&M was able to take an early lead in the top of the first of game one. A walk was followed by a double to left center to put the Lady Buffs out front 1-0.

The Rambelles broke through with a hit in the top of the first with Micherie Koria hitting a single to left field. The senior stole second base but was stranded.

WT added a run to its lead in the top of the fifth. Urbany got the first two batters of the inning on groundouts to Ciara Sheppard at shortstop. A single through the left side and a wild pitch allowed a runner to stand on second. WT hit a single through the right side to score the runner at second base to take a 2-0 lead.

Madison Greenwell answered in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field. Koria stepped up and lined a triple down the left field line that bounced off the foul pole to score Greenwell and cut the lead to 2-1.

The scoring continued for both teams in the sixth. WT added two runs with a home run by Allie Smith to go up 4-1. Urbany answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to bring it to 4-2. Tina Cisneros doubled and Brooke Mangold came on to pinch run but was stranded at third base.

Angelo State couldn't complete the comeback in the bottom of the seventh losing 4-2. Urbany drops to 10-3 on the season. The sophomore pitched well only allowing five hits and striking out three.

The Rambelles return to action next Thursday against Texas Woman's in Denton.
