No. 5 Rams, Buffs split four-game series at Foster Field

SAN ANGELO – West Texas A&M scored the final four runs of the game with three in the seventh and another in the eighth to take a 5-2 win over No. 5-ranked Angelo State on Sunday as the team split a four-game Lone Star Conference series at Foster Field.

The Rams (18-4, 8-3 LSC) led the game 2-1 after scoring two runs in the sixth inning, first with a Cameron Massengill sacrifice fly to center field to score Nehwon Norkeh and then their second run on a Derek Tyner double to center field to score Paxton DeLaGarza who had reached on an infield single. ASU, which finished the game with five hits, were unable to score again and saw the Buffs (14-10) score on a single, error and wild pitch in the seventh to even the series and drop the Rams to 15-2 at home this season.

Matt Shannon (1-1) took the loss for the Rams in a relief appearance where he surrendered three runs and struck out five in 4.0 innings of work after coming in for starter Kellen Rholl who had one strikeout and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings of work.

DeLaGarza led the Rams at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run scored, while Tyner and Chandler Patterson accounted for the other two hits for ASU.

Brooks Trujillo (2-2) earned the win for the Buffs after striking out four and limiting the Rams to only four hits in seven innings of work, while Matt Cole and Scott Cooper led the WT hitters with two hits each. Max Brennan had two RBI on one hit in the game.

The Rams will return to action next weekend with a four-game series at Texas A&M-Kingsville against the Javelinas before travelling to play at Eastern New Mexico.
