Rams drop third game of series to Javelinas, Look for Game 4 win to avoid sweep

KINGSVILLE – Stifled by Texas A&M-Kingsville pitching for the third straight game, Angelo State fell 7-0 in the first game of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader against the Javelinas on Monday and will need a win in the series finale to avoid a sweep at Nolan Ryan Field.

The Rams (18-7, 8-6 LSC) were limited to four hits in the third game of the series and were shut out for the second time in the series and for just the second time all season. ASU, which had been averaging over six runs a game, has managed just one run in the first three games of the series. The fourth and final game of the series started at 3:30 p.m. in Kingsville.

Bryce Zak (4-3) took the loss for the Rams after allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. Zak struck out five, but also walked five in a game where he allowed only three hits. The Javelinas (18-7, 12-2 LSC) extended their winning streak to nine games with the victory behind a complete-game win by Matt Terrones (5-0).

Terrones struck out four, walked four and scattered four hits in seven innings of work against the Rams. The Javelinas, who have trailed only once in the series, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a run scored on a strikeout that turned into a wild pitch which would have ended the inning without any damage. TAMUK would add four runs in the sixth to take command of the game.

Paxton DeLaGarza led the Rams with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including his seventh double of the season, while Cody Semler and Brett David also had hits for ASU. David hit a lead-off double to start the second inning for his fifth double and 29th hit of the season.

Hayden Vesley had two RBI on one hit for the Javelinas who are now 15-2 at home this season going into today's series finale.
