PORTALES, N.M. – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team took the season series from Eastern New Mexico after rebounding from a 5-2 loss with a 12-3 five inning run-rule victory on Saturday.
The Rambelles are 18-2 overall now and 5-1 in the LSC and tied tied a season highs for runs (12) and hits (15) in the second game. Â ENMU (13-7, 1-3 LSC) limited ASU to two runs on eight hits in game one. Â
"We knew today was going to be a difficult day but we didn't bring energy to the field early," ASU head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "Once again we couldn't get the big hit when we had scoring opportunities. In game two, the big hits finally came and the result speaks for itself. Brandy (Marlett) had a really strong outing and
Megan Granado had a great weekend at the plate. We are looking for big crowds this next week at Mayer Field as some of the best teams in the country will be coming to town."
After falling 5-2 in the first game, ASU took out some frustrations in game two. The Rambelles jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning. All five runs would come with two outs.
Micherie Koria was hit by a pitch and stole second. The senior used two wild pitches to score.
Kenedy Urbany was on second after a walk followed by a wild pitch and
Darian Dunn launched her second home of the season to left field.
Lanie Robinson would drive home
Tina Cisneros with a RBI single while
Ciara Sheppard scored on a throwing error by the ENMU catcher.
The Zias would get one run in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch but ASU would get the run back in the second. Koria drew a walk and recorded her second steal of the game. She would score for the second-straight inning on a grounder by Dunn to make it 6- 1.
Brandy Marlett was able to keep the Zias off the scoreboard in the second and third inning. The Henderson, Nev., native got a runner at home in the second on a fielder's choice and got a liner to third base with a runner on third. In the third inning, she struck out the Kyra Sirag with a runners on first and second.
After two ENMU runs in the fourth, the Rambelles exploded for six runs on seven hits in the top of the fifth.
Madison Greenwell, Koria,
Amber Rendon, Dunn,
Kelly Johnson and
Lanie Robinson all scored in the inning. Hill collected two hits in the inning and Robinson had a walk and a single. Rendon Dunn, Granado and Johnson recorded hits in the inning.
Marlett secured the run-rule win and the season series with a strikeout. The freshman moved to 9-1 on the season limiting ENMU to three runs on eight hits in five innings.
The Rambelles struggled in game one leaving 12 runners on base and scoring a season-low two runs.
Sheppard scored the first run of the game on a bases loaded walk from Koria. ASU was unable to do any damage leaving three stranded in the second. ENMU would tie it up in the bottom of the second with a RBI single.
The Zias took the lead in the third after sacrifice fly scored an unearned run. The Rambelles had a bases loaded opportunity in the top of the fourth inning but failed to convert.
ENMU extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run home run off Urbany. The sophomore was pulled in the fifth after allowing five runs, four earned, on 12 hits. Marlett relieved Urbany pitching a scoreless 1.2 innings and striking out two.
ASU would try to battle back as Granado hit a solo shot to right field to cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning. The senior went 4 for 5 in the two games with a double and a home run. The Rambelles threatened again in the sixth as Greenwell sat at third after a single to start the inning. A fielder's choice and a double play by ENMU ended the threat.
Urbany was credited with her first loss of the seaosn and  is now 9-1.
The Rambelles will return to Mayer Field this week with national powers No. 5 St. Mary's and No. 1 West Texas A&M coming to town. ASU will face No. 5 St. Mary's in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The No. 1 Lady Buffs will be in town for a LSC four game series starting on Friday.
