LAREDO, Texas – The No. 14 Angelo State softball team split the first two games of a three-game series, winning game one 5-2 and losing 3-1 in game two, with Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field.
"Brandy (Marlett) and Kenedy (Urbany) were really good today," ASU head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "A split isn't what we were after, but the more games we play the more opportunities to get on a roll. Hopefully the rain will hold off so that we can get one more chance to compete tomorrow."
The Rambelles (28-11-1) racked up 13 hits, two home runs and two doubles. It is the first game ASU has hit two home runs since March 6. The Dustdevils (20-20) limited Angelo State to three hits in game two to win for just the second time in the all-time series.
Micherie Koria scored the first run of the game as
Tina Cisneros singled to score the senior from third base.
Megan Granado doubled to left field, her 13
th of the year, to plate Cisneros and give ASU the 2-0 lead.
The Rambelles continued scoring in the fourth inning after a
Madison Greenwell hit her third triple of the season.
Lanie Robinson doubled to left center for her 15
th RBI of the season.
The fifth inning started with a bang.
Kenedy Urbany and Cisneros hit back-to-back solo home runs to increase the advantage to 5-0 in favor of ASU. It is Urbany's ninth home run of the year and Cisneros third.
Brandy Marlett threw her 21
st complete game of the season and improved to 16-4 on the season. She only allowed five hits and two runs. The two runs came in the sixth on a two-run home run from Brandi Giles. The freshman struck out seven to increase her season total to 129.
Angelo State struggled to find their offense in game two as the Rambelles were held to just one run and stranded six runners.
ASU took a 1-0 lead with a RBI double from Greenwell. The freshman took the ball to left field and scored
Rachel Moore from first base.
Urbany, who only allowed three runs, struck out five in the game and limited TAMIU to seven hits. All three Dustdevil runs came in the third inning. A passed ball allowed the first run and back-to-back singles made it 3-1 after the third inning.
ASU threatened in the fifth and sixth innings. Koria and
Ambra Hill were sitting on first and second with one out but Delainy Thompson recorded two fly balls to end the top of the fifth. The Rambelles had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the sixth but Thompson induced a double-play grounder to end the inning.  Urbany drops to 12-7 on the season with the loss.
The Rambelles will conclude the series tomorrow at 12 p.m. with a single game against Texas A&M International.
