SAN ANGELO – The No. 14 Angelo State softball team used three home runs in game one and
Brandy Marlett tied a career high with 11 strikeouts in game two to open the series with two wins against Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday night at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (30-11-1, 12-9-1 LSC) hit four total home runs, including three in game one, to score a total of 12 runs in the two games. Texas A&M-Commerce (23-21, 12-12 LSC) was held to a combined seven hits and 15 stikeouts.
Game one started out with some early fireworks for ASU.
Rachel Moore led off the bottom of the first with her third home run of the season to center field. The hits continued as
Kenedy Urbany blasted a pitch to left center for her 10
th of the year and a 2-0 Angelo State lead.
Texas A&M-Commerce cut the lead in half on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. The Lions took advantage of an error in the top of the fifth to grab a 3-2 advantage.
The Rambelles opened the game in the fifth with six runs.
Madison Greenwell doubled to left field to score
Ambra Hill to tie the game. ASU loaded the bases with two walks.
Megan Granado beat out a grounder in the hole between short stop and third base for a base hit to plate Greenwell and
Kylie Love.
Camry Weinheimer stepped to the plate and hit a three-run homer to right center to extend the lead to 8-3. It is just the second time this season that ASU has hit three home runs in a single game. The first was against Chadron State on February 15.
An error in the top of the seventh made the final 8-4 before Urbany induced a ground ball to the short stop to end the game. Urbany only allowed four runs, one earned, to win her 13
th game of the season. She struck out four batters and limited the Lions to six hits.
Game two was a pitching duel between two freshmen in ASU's
Brandy Marlett and TAMUC's Courtney Moore.
TAMUC struck first with a run in the top of the first. The Rambelles answered in the bottom of the second with two unearned runs.
Ambra Hill hit an RBI single and
Micherie Koria used her speed to pull off a double steal with Hill to take a 2-1 lead.
The Lions tied the game in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Marlett. The freshman had struck out seven and allowed five walks through four innings.
It didn't take the Rambelles long to respond.
Ciara Sheppard battled to a full count and sent a pitch over the center field wall for a 3-2 lead. It is the freshman's second home run of the season. Â ASU added an insurance run in the fifth. Weinheimer came through with two outs with a single to bring home
Brooke Mangold for a 4-2 advantage.
The Lions made it a one run game with in the bottom of the sixth at 4-3 but it was erased in the bottom of the inning. Koria laid down a beautiful bunt single and scored on a grounder from Moore.
Marlett ended the game with a strikeout to tie her career high with 11 strikeouts. It is the third time this season she has struck out at least 10 batters. The freshman held TAMUC to three runs on seven hits and moved to 17-4 on the season.
Angelo State will honor four seniors, Cisneors, Koria, Granado and Moore, prior to the start of the doubleheader at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
