Weinheimer's Bat Fuels No. 14 Rambelles Sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce

SAN ANGELO – Camry Weinheimer hit a single up the middle to score two runs to fuel a 2-1 comeback win in game two as the No. 14 Angelo State softball team swept its four game Lone Star Conference series with Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles (32-11-1, 14-9-1 LSC) earned their first conference sweep of the season despite having to sit through a two hour and 18 minute weather delay in game one. ASU recorded 13 hits in the two games and scored six runs. The pitching staff of Kenedy Urbany and Brandy Marlett threw back-to-back four hitters. Texas A&M-Commerce (23-23, 12-14 LSC) was held to a combined eight hits and three runs in the two games.

"This weekend was huge," ASU head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We have been struggling for the last month to month and a half to consistently win games. To be able to come out and beat a good Texas A&M-Commerce team four times is big for us. I'm proud of the way they competed and it's a good time to have this happen with post-season play coming up."

The Rambelle offense, whom racked up 10 hits in game one, struggled through the first five innings of game two. ASU Tina Cisneros stepped to the plate with one on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The senior drew a walk and Megan Granado followed it up with a walk to load the bases for Weinheimer. The freshman hit a single up the middle to bring home pinch runners Kelly Johnson and Lauryn Donnelly to put ASU on top 2-1.

Brandy Marlett, who held TAMUC to four hits, sat the Lions down in order to secure the come from behind victory and complete the sweep. It is the freshman's 18th win of the season. She struck out five while only allowing four hits and one run.

Marlett and TAMUC's Aundria Zunigia-Romero were locked in a pitching duel in game two. The two pitchers combined to only allow seven hits, two runs and struck out 11.

The Lions struck first in the top of the second. Monica Cherry hit a double to right field to score Danielle Guerra for a 1-0 advantage. Two of TAMUC's four hits came in the second inning.

Marlett would hold the Lions in check only allowed a double in the third and a single in the fifth.

In game one, ASU used the bat of Weinheimer to take an early 2-0 advantage. The freshman crushed a ball over the center field fence for a two-run home run. It the third home run of the season for Weinheimer.

The Rambelles threatened in the third with runners at first and second but lightening came through and delayed the game for two hours and 18 minutes. After the delay, a wild pitch moved Madison Greenwell and Brooke Mangold into scoring position but TAMUC got a grounder to end the inning.

Micherie Koria ripped a double to left center in the bottom of the fourth to score Megan Grando to extend the lead to 3-0. Texas A&M-Commerce answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2.

Koria stepped up again in the bottom of the sixth and added an insurance run. The senior hit a double to right center to score the flex runner Ciara Sheppard to increase the lead to 4-2.

Kenedy Urbany would end the game on a ground out for her 14th win of the season. The sophomore limited the Lions to just four hits and two runs while striking out four.

The Rambelles will return to action next Friday and Saturday on the road in Lawton for a four-game LSC series with Cameron.
