SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State volleyball team swept Eastern New Mexico (25-15, 25-9, 25-21) in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center to win its seventh straight match on Friday night.
The Belles continued their undefeated conference run to 3-0 and extended their overall record to 14-3. The offensive attack was once again led by
Brianna Sotello and
Mallory Blauser. The duo both hit double-digit kills with 10 each and both have at least 10 matches with double-digit kills. They were assisted by
Zoey Hanrahan would add eight kills of her own.
Maggi Jo Keffury distributed the ball 34 times and has consistently finished with over 30 assists in 16 matches. Keffury would also add nine digs for the night along with senior
Katie MacLeay and sophomore
Kelly Hasbrouck.
"It was a good win for us tonight," ASU head volleyball coach
Chuck Waddington said after the match. "It is important for us to hold our home court and I felt we played well, especially early. We took advantage of Eastern New Mexico's mistakes and really capitalized on that. Early in the third set they jumped on us and we were high error to start that set. We rebounded pretty well and played our style after that."
The Belles jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with a pair of kills from sophomore Sotello and several Greyhound errors in the first set. Midway through the set, Blauser would chip in several kills of her own to extend the lead by seven. Up 24-15, Hanrahan would close the set out with her third kill of the night. Angelo State held the Eastern New Mexico attack to a -.093 hitting percentage.
In the second set, Angelo State dominated the court with an offensive attack that would make a 16-3 run aided by a .579 hitting percentage. Sotello would add five of her 10 total kills which included a service ace. The Belles would take the set 25-9 and head into the intermission with a 2-0 match lead.
The third set would prove to be more of a challenge for the Belles. ENMU jumped out to a 6-1 run. ASU would fight back to tie the set at ten with a pivotal service ace from Sotello. ENMU committed five attacking errors over the next six points and Blauser would put the match away scoring four of the five final points.
The Belles look to extend their win streak to eight matches tomorrow afternoon against the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
