Belles Pull Away in Second Half for 81-61 Win Over Texas A&M-Kingsville

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team held Texas A&M-Kingsville to just 31.0-percent for a 81-61 victory on Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Belles improve to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the Lone Star Conference after shooting 46.4-percent including 56.0-percent in the second half. ASU was aided by 31 bench points and out rebounded TAMUK 47-42. Texas A&M-Kingsville drops to 5-13, 0-8 LSC.

"It was the game we warned them about this week," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "We were sloppy and we didn't play well in the first half. I'm really proud of them for stepping up in the second half. It wasn't our prettiest or best win but we found a way to get it done."

Angelo State was led by five players in double figures. KeAnna Kelly finished with a game high 17 points. Taylor Dorsey recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The junior grabbed 11 defensive rebounds along with four assists.  Jasmine Prophet chipped in 13 points and Natalie Quesnel scored a career high 12 points. Diamalises Rivera added 10 points as well.

The Belles started the game by limiting the Javelinas to just nine points in the first quarter. Texas A&M-Kingsville had a 6-5 advantage but a Kiahna Thompson 3-pointer to spark a 10-3 run over the final 5:03 of the first quarter. One of Kelley's four 3-pointers on the night capped the run off for a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

ASU pushed its lead to 20-11 on a pair of free throws from Dorsey but TAMUK pulled to with three on a 6-0 run. A jumper by Dorsey followed by a Rivera jumper and free throw made it 25-19. The two teams were even the rest of the way until Kelly was fouled on a jumper in the paint. The sophomore made the free throw to help ASU take a 34-27 advantage at the break.

The Belles started the second half by shooting 66.7-percent in the third quarter. TAMUK kept pace in the third by making 8-of-11 from the free throw line. The ASU lead ballooned to 10 on Kelly's third 3-pointer of the night to make it 40-30 but the Javelinas continued to fight using a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to five at 42-37. ASU would score six unanswered points to push the lead back to 11 at 48-37 with 2:44 to go in the third. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as ASU held a 58-46 lead going into the fourth quarter.

TAMUK opened the fourth quarter the same way they ended the third with a 3-pointer to only be down 58-49. The Javelinas would make the deficit just eight points but TAMUK wouldn't get any closer. A pair of free throws from Quensel pushed the lead back to double digits. The lead would fluctuate from 10 points to the biggest at 20 on a Quesnel 3-pointer. The freshman scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. Rivera hit a jumper to make the final 81-61.

TAMUK's Kaylin Roher led the Javelinas with 16 points and Kaylee Kana grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Belles will hit the road for Canyon for a game with West Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3
