ODESSA, Texas - The Angelo State women's soccer team erupted for a season high four goals in a 4-1 LSC road victory over Texas Permian Basin on Wednesday evening.
The Belles (10-4-1, 6-3 LSC) outshot the Falcons (1-11-1, 1-8 LSC) 17-7 and 9-4 in shots on goal. ASU didn't allow a single corner kick and reached the double-digit win mark for the fifth straight year.
"I thought the first 15 to 20 minutes were really good," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "Demi Tsambasis had a great start with two early goals. I was disappointed in the penalty we gave up. We made a mistake and it cost us a goal. I thought we responded well in the second half to UTPB's formation changes and I was pleased with Loni Byers being able to score twice."
The goals came early for ASU with two inside the first five minutes of the match. Demi Tsambasis took a pass from Shay Williams and dribble towards the net. The senior drew the keeper toward her and shot the ball to the right side for her 11th goal of the season at the 2' mark of the first half.
It didn't take long for Tsambasis to find the net again. Just two minutes and 27 seconds later, Callie Smith served a ball into the box and Tsambasis leaped and used her head to send the ball into the back of the net. It is her 12th goal of the season.
UTPB cut the lead in half with a penalty kick from Ariel Roybal at the 38' mark of the first half.
Loni Byers came out and padded the lead not once but twice for the Belles. Elizabeth Rodriguez found Byers to increase the lead to 3-1 at the 47' mark of the second half. She added her third goal of the season a few minutes later. Byers took a shot from the left side and banged it off the post for her third goal of the year at the 56' mark. Tsambasis was credited with an assist on the play.
"Loni's second goal is one of the best we have seen this season," McCorkle said. "It was a pure strike that went far post, hit the post and went back across into the side netting. It was a no doubter."
Tsambasis led ASU with seven shots of which five were on goal. Morgan Sibson recorded three shots while Byers and Ally Warren each had two. Trenadey Scott, Lauren Perry and Kathleen Keoughan took one shot each.
The Belles will set their sights towards Midwestern State on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
