DENTON, Texas - The No. 10 Angelo State volleyball team swept Texas Woman's (25-15, 25-21, 25-23) on the road Friday evening.
The Belles climb to 19-2 overall and 10-1 in the Lone Star Conference with Friday's victory. The Belles averaged 12.67 kills per set and a .217 clip on offense. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 7-14 and 3-9 in the LSC.
"We had a pretty good start to the match as we capitalized errors," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "The Pioneers cleaned up their side in the second and third sets forcing us to manufacture our own points. Mallory [Davidson] dug a ton of balls and Morgan [Seaton] was pretty solid for us as well." Â
Brianna Sotello and Mallory Blauser led the attack for the Belles against TWU. Sotello dropped in a team high 12 kills, while adding an ace to her numbers for the evening. Defensively, the junior recorded a team second 13 digs and two blocks. Blauser followed turning in an eight kill performance. She also dropped in an ace from the service line to cap her match numbers.
Mallory Davidson, Micheala Sifuentes, Tulani Titley and Morgan Season all had solid performances for the ASU defense. Davidson led the squad with 17 digs for her fourth consecutive match with double-figure digs. Sifuentes also marked double-digit digs against the Pioneers as she chalked up 11 for the night. Titley led the defense with four blocks and Seaton a team second three blocks. Seaton was also third on the team with seven kills.
Setting up the ASU attack was Meghan Parker. The San Antonio native added 34 assist to her number for the season. In addition, she also continues to lead the Belles in the service ace department as she added another one against Texas Woman's, which takes her total to 27 on the year.
The Pioneers placed the first point of the match on the board, but ASU would quickly respond placing three of its own on the board with a kill from Abbie Lynn and a Blauser ace. The Belles would maintain the lead for the remainder of the set. Ahead 5-4, ASU stretched its lead with a 11-3 run that saw big swings from Parker, Sotello, Titley, Seaton. It also saw a pair of timely blocks from Blauser and Titley, as well as Lynn and Seaton. Despite several attempts to regain some ground, the Pioneers would be unable to catch the Belles. A TWU error would close the set out in ASU's favor.
Like the first set TWU would score first, taking a 3-1 lead over ASU. Two kills from Sotello and a Sotello/ Titley block would allow the Belles to take the lead. ASU would once again hold on to its lead despite the Pioneers bring the match back to even 10 times throughout the set. A final Sotello kill for the set would take the Belles into the break with a 2-0 set lead.
In the final set, ASU took an early 5-3 lead before the Pioneers would take it over with a 4-0 run. TWU would maintain the upper hand until, down 16-19, a Sotello kill kicked off an 8-2 ASU run giving the Belles a 23-21 lead. Blauser and Sotello would secure the sweep for the Belles.
