Belles Fall to Texas A&M-Commerce

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team opened the scoring Friday night with a goal from Demi Tsambasis, but the Belles were unable to hold onto the lead, falling to Texas A&M-Commerce, 2-1 on Friday night at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Belles (7-3-1, 3-2-0) outshot the Lions (7-3-0, 4-1-0) 20 to 13 in the match and had nine shots on goal to just seven for Texas A&M Commerce, but it was not enough to put ASU on top.

"I was really proud of the girls," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I thought the first half we played really well, negating all of the things that Commerce usually wants to do. The second half was pretty good two, except for those two plays, but overall I thought we stuck to our game plan."

The first 45 minutes was back and forth, with ASU registering only one more shot than TAMC, and the two teams were both scoreless going into halftime. Tsambasis was finally able to find the back of the net 20 minutes into the second period of play, heading in a cross from Callie Smith for her 10th goal of the season.

"I put in a lot of work in the summer and just having the mentality that this is my last year have really helped me." Tsambasis said. "I want to go out with a bang and I want success for my team, so I don't really second guess myself this year."

The assist was Smith's first in the 2016 season, and the senior recorded a season high in shots (3) and shots on goal (2) in the match.

The Lions tied the game a little over ten minutes later on Savannah Grasser's sixth goal of the season, and then took the lead in the 84th minute on another goal from Grasser.

Tsambasis finished the game with one other shot on goal and four total shots. Leading the Belles in shots was midfielder Elizabeth Rodriguez with six including two on goal. Analise Watson had two shots that were both on goal, and Megan Allen also recorded one shot on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Sammy Cude took the loss for the Belles, falling to 6-2-1 on the season.

The Belles have a quick turnaround to their next matchup, taking on Texas Woman's at 2 p.m. Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.
