No. 12 Belles Begin Road Trip with Sweep of MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 12 Angelo State volleyball team kicked of its two match road trip with a sweep (25-15, 25-14, 25-15) of Midwestern State on Friday evening.

With the win, the Belles jump to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the Lone Star Conference.  This marked the team's 11th sweep of the season and The ASU offense recorded a .378 clip for the match, while out –blocking the opposition, 7-2, on defense. For MSU, the loss drops the Mustangs to 8-9, 3-5 LSC on the year.

"We were pretty efficient tonight on offense," said ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "Meghan [Parker] did a nice job of distributing the ball and our pins we really terminal. Our serving was a lot cleaner this match as well. Brianna [Sotello], Mallory [Blauser] and Abbie [Lynn] were all pretty automatic for us tonight."

Leading the Belles on the attack was senior Mallory Blauser and junior Abbie Lynn. Blauser led the squad with 13 kills for the match. She recorded an outstanding .480 attack percentage against the Mustangs. The Round Rock native also led the team from the service line with three aces on the evening. Defensively she added a pair of blocks to her totals. Lynn checked in with a team second 10 kills for the match. She recorded a team best .526 attack percentage for the match and co-led the defense with four blocks.

Brianna Sotello, Tulani Titley and Mallory Davidson headed the ASU defensive efforts. Sotello racked up a team leading 12 digs, while contributing eight kills to the attack. Defending along the net, Titley turned in a four block performance to co-lead the squad. Making her second start at libero, Davidson finished the match with seven digs.

Distributing for the Belles, Meghan Parker recorded 29 assists for the match. She also assisted the defense with seven digs.

Angelo State got things started early with a 5-0 run right out of the gate, with Blauser rocketing in the first two kills of the match. MSU attempted to rally, but would be unable to catch the Belles. With the score 12-7, a mustang service error jump started another large 6-0 run for ASU. This run saw a big block from Titley Lynn followed by kills from Blauser and Lynn. The Mustangs would close out the first set in favor of ASU with consecutive attack errors.

MSU would strike first in the second set, however, straight kills from Lynn and Blauser accompanied by a Blauser ace would regain the lead for the Belles. The Mustangs would battle back to bring the game to an even five on the board when a kill Morgan Seaton set ASU off on a lengthy 10-2 run that would place the score at 15-7. MSU would hang around until, with 18-12 on the board, Seaton would drop in another pair of kills and team up for a block with Jenna Markey. This sparked the Belles final run (7-2) of the match. As in the first set, Midwestern would commit an attack error to give ASU the final point of the set and a 2-0 set lead heading into the break.

The third and final set started with Blauser putting the first point on the board. The Mustangs answered taking a 6-4 lead. Exchanging small runs and the several leads, MSU would hold off the Belles until mid-set. Down 11-13, a Blauser kill set off a massive 14-2 ASU rally which saw big swings from Lynn and Sotello along with blocks from Lynn and Titley. The match point would be dropped in by Eadara Files as she recorded her first ace of the season.

Angelo State continues its weekend road trip on Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m. with a match against Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma.
