SAN ANGELO – The No. 6/8 Angelo State women's basketball team opened conference play with an 84-59 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday night at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Belles (4-0, 1-0 LSC) shot 47.5-percent and received 38 points from the bench. The Javelinas (3-2, 0-1 LSC) were held to 33.3-percent shooting and went 1-for-10 from behind the arc. ASU scored 28 points off 16 TAMUK turnovers while also adding 42 points in the paint. The Belles used the free throw line to their advantage hitting 21-of-25 and also dished out 20 assists, which is a season high.
"These conference wins are all tough to get," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said after the game. "If you're playing a team out of the Lone Star Conference, you've got to be ready to play. Kingsville came out ready to play and it took us a minute to get going. We'll take the conference win though and look forward to seeing what we can do to get better."
Taylor Dorsey once again eclipsed the 20 point mark for the fourth-straight game leading all scorers with 24 points. Chenelle Pelle scored a career high 15 points and Madi Greenwood added a career high 14 points. A total of 11 players scored at least one point for ASU.
ASU got out to a sluggish start in the first quarter being outscored 15-12 by TAMUK but bounced back in a big way in the second quarter. The defensive pressure turned up and TAMUK committed 10 turnovers in the quarter that resulted in 17 ASU points. Dorsey used her speed scoring 10 of her 24 points in the second quarter and Pelle had eight of her 15 as well. .
The two teams traded leads through the first three minutes of the quarter. A pair of free throws by Bria Freierson put ASU up 27-22 and sparked a 15-6 run. Keanna Kelly drained a 3-pointer while Greenwood, Frierson, Dorsey and Christina Robinson all scored during the run to put the Belles up 42-28 at the break.
ASU came out of the break and went to work in the paint outscoring TAMUK 14-8. Greenwood sank a 3-pointer at the 5:24 mark to push the lead to 25. The junior followed ended the quarter with a jumper and a layup to extend the advantage to 68-39.
The Belles continued to lead by at least 24 points throughout the fourth quarter. A pair of free throws by Bethany Ross gave the Belles their biggest lead of the game at 80-50 before the final ended at 84-59.
The Belles will host Texas Woman's on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
