WICHITA FALLS - The No. 5/7 Angelo State women's basketball team rolled to its seventh straight victory with an 84-47 road LSC victory over Midwestern State on Thursday night in Wichita Falls.
The Belles (7-0, 3-0 LSC) remain undefeated overall shooting 50-percent from the field and holding the Mustangs (2-6, 0-3 LSC) to just 27-percent shooting. It is the fourth straight time ASU has held a team under 60 points and the fifth overall this season. ASU dominated in the paint scoring 38 points and outrebounded MSU 43-37.
"Tonight we played a complete game," Angelo State head basketball coach Kevin Baker said. " We defended and rebounded well. We shot the ball well tonight and I thought our post players played their best game of the season. Now our team will focus on final exams and prepare for two very tough games in Las Vegas."
Three players scored in double figures led by Taylor Dorsey's 21 points. It is the senior's sixth game with at least 20 points. Chenelle Pelle scored a career high 16 points with eight rebounds and Keanna Kelly added 10 points.
The Belles opened the game on an 11-2 run through the first four minutes of the game. Midwestern State battled to make the deficit 16-10 before a Kelly three pointer sparked a 7-0 run to end the first quarter up 23-10.
The Mustangs came out in the second quarter scoring four of the first five points but Kelly hit a layup to start a 10-3 run highlighted by a Madi Greenwood 3-pointer. Dorsey followed it up on the next position of a 3-pointer of her own and a pair of Bethany Ross free throws put ASU on top 37-17. MSU looked to end the half on a 4-1 run until Dorsey drained a three pointer to make the score 38-21 at the break.
Jasmine Prophet opened the second half on a tear. The senior scored the first five points and Christina Robinson and Dorsey hit back-to-back three pointers to for an 11-2 run. The two teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the third quarter as ASU extended its lead to 60-34 after three quarters.
ASU scored 10 of the first 14 points in the fourth quarter as Pelle, Kelly and Shauna Coleman all scored. Kelly drained her second three pointer of the lead as the Belles led by as much as 38 in the fourth quarter until the final of 84-47.
Not a single Mustang scored in double figures with three leading the way with seven points each.
The Belles will return to action at the Holiday Hoops Classic held in Las Vegas, Nevada against Western Washington and Northwest Nazarene on Dec. 17 and Dec. 19.
