CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State softball team dropped its first two contests of the season in a 4-2 loss to Chadron State and falling 8-6 to Colorado State-Pueblo at the WT Invitational in Canyon on Friday.
"I was happy with the way we battled today but we made too many mistakes to win," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "It is a new day tomorrow and we have to be ready to play."
The Rambelles were down early in the first game of the day. Chadron State scored a run in the first and second of starter Urbany.
ASU struggled to bring runs home stranding nine runners including a bases loaded situation in the first inning.
The Rambelles finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning. Riley Adams drew a walk to start the inning and Kelly Johnson drove a ball to right field for a triple and brought home pinch runner Morgan Hill. Brooke Mangold put down a squeeze bunt in the next at bat to plate Johnson to tie the game at two.
CCS scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth off and error and two hits. ASU tried to rally with two runners in the top of the seventh but a grounder to shortstop ended the game at 4-2.
Urbany was credited with her first loss. The junior threw 6.0 innings giving up four runs on eight hits. She did strike out five batters.
ASU was forced to battle from behind in game two as well. Colorado State-Pueblo jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four innings before the Rambelles answered.
Alexis Evans started the bottom of the fourth with a single before Becky Wilhelm drove her home on a fielder's choice. Taegan Kirk scored an unearned run to cut the lead to 8-2.
The runs continued in the sixth. Evans and Kirk each recorded back-to-back hits for the second time in the game and would score on a two RBI double from Wilhelm to make it 8-4. Kirk went 3-for-4 during the game and scored two runs while Wilhelm led the team with three RBIs. Madison Greenwell hit into a fielder's choice to score Wilhelm and Bailey Wallace plated Lanie Robinson to cut the deficit to 8-6.
ASU had runners at second and third but couldn't score. The Rambelles left eight runners on base in game two.
Riley Adams came in in the fourth inning in relief for her first collegiate appearance in the circle. The freshman only allowed run one and five hits. Only two hits came after the fourth inning. Marlett was given the loss after tossing 3.0 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits.
The Rambelles will face Lubbock Christian at 10 a.m. in the first game of the day and play Metro State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
