WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 11 Angelo State basketball team cut a 23 point No. 21 Midwestern State lead down to two with 47 seconds left but couldn't complete the comeback falling 76-71 in Wichita Falls on Saturday night.
The Rams fall to 20-5 on the season and 8-5 in conference play. ASU was able to score 30 points off 25 Midwestern State. The Mustangs (20-5, 9-4 LSC) shot 49.1-percent from the field while limited ASU to 34.2-shooting.
Tre Bennett led all scorers with 23 points. The senior sank six 3-pointers and dished out three assists. Quay King helped fuel the comeback with 15 points all coming from behind the arc. Stedman Allen chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Rams found itself down 61-38 with 12:26 left to go in the game. Bennett came out of the media timeout and sank a three pointer to make it 61-41 and force a Midwestern State timeout. Angelo State would start its comeback with an Allen layup that sparked a 25-6 run. Bennet drained four three points and King sank two to pull ASU within 67-63 with 2:27 to go in the second half.
A MSU jumper and two free throws pushed the deficit to eight at 71-63 with less than two minutes but the Rams weren't finished. A pair of free throws by Allen followed by a MSU turnover gave Angelo State a chance to make the game one possession. King swished a three pointer to cut the lead to 71-68 at the 1:24 mark. Two more MSU free throws forced another 3-pointer. King answered to once again make it a one possession game at 73-71 with 47 seconds to go. Midwestern State would pull away scoring the final three points to win 76-71.
ASU was forced to comeback from the 23 point deficit as Midwestern State hit 57.7-percent from the field in the first half. The Mustangs hit six 3-pointers and held a 45-32 lead at the end of the first half. MSU opened the second half with a 16-6 run to grab the 23 point lead at the 12:26 mark of the second half.
Five MSU players scored in double figures led by Khapri Alston's 17 points.
The Rams will return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 27 against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7:30 p.m.Â
