AUSTIN – The Angelo State softball team earned a doubleheader split with St. Edward's falling in game one 3-2 in 11 innings and winning game two 6-0 on Saturday.
The Belles are now 11-4 on the season while St. Edward's moves to 8-6 on the season. After being held to three hits in game one, ASU responded with 13 hits and six runs in game two. The pitching duo of Kenedy Urbany and Brandy Marlett combined to only give up six hits in 16.2.
"We played well," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Brandy (Marlett) and Kenedy (Urbany) both were awesome. Ciara Sheppard had a great day defensively along with Brooke Mangolf and Ambra Hill. Anytime we are able to get a split at St. Edward's it is a pretty good day. Now  we have to focus and get ready for conference play next weekend."
The Belles rebounded from the first game with another stellar pitching performance. Kenedy Urbany had a career outing only allowing one hit in 6.0 innings of work to move to 6-2 on the season. It is the fewest hits allowed in a start in Urbany's career. She also struck out two batters. Morgan Hill threw 1.0 inning and allowed two hits to close the game out. Â
ASU scored quickly as Taegan Kirk drove in Bailey Wallace with a single to the shortstop. Kirk was 2-for-4 in the game with a RBI and a run scored.
Two more runs came home in the second. Wallace recorded her second straight hit with a double to right center to plate Ambra Hill. Urbany helped her cause with a RBI single to centerfield to extend the lead to 3-0.
A. Hill stepped to the plate in the third with two runners on and two outs. The senior laced a triple to left field to score Kirk and Kelly Johnson. She would score on an illegal pitch to make it 6-0 and Urbany and M. Hill took care of the rest. A. Hill finished the game going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Urbany's perfect game bid came up just short. SEU's Alex Mayfield laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit to end the threat. The junior would not walk a batter the entire game.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between ASU's Brandy Marlett and St. Edward's Lauren Slatten. The two pitchers combined to only allow eight hits including only three through the first eight innings. Both pitchers held no-hit bids until the fourth inning.
Tied at 0 the international tie-breaker rule would go into effect in the top of the ninth inning. Each half inning, a runner would be placed on second. Â
The Rambelles struck first as Becky Wilhelm set a single over the second baseman's head to score the first run of the game. St. Edward's would answer with a RBI single to tie the game at one.
A sacrifice fly by Wallace brought in Robinson from third base and again gave ASU lead at 2-1. St. Edward's tied the game on a RBI single to send it to the 11th.
ASU was unable to score in the 11th and the Hilltoppers scored the go ahead run on a single up the middle to win the game 3-2.
The Rambelles open up conference play on the road next Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27 against Texas A&M-Kingsville.Â
