Rambelles Sweep Doubleheader from Texas A&M-Kingsville to Open LSC

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State softball team pounded out 29 hits and scored 22 runs to sweep the first two games of its four games Lone Star Conference series, 13-3 and 9-6, against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday in Kingsville.

The Rambelles improved to 13-4 and start 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference. Ten different players recorded at least one hit and one RBI. The pitching staff limited Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-7, 0-2 LSC) to just six hits and a .140 hitting average.

"It was good to come down here and get two good wins," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "The first game we really did a great job of swinging the bats. We stepped off the bus ready to hit this weekend and that is exciting.  We hit every inning and had a chance to score every inning. Our pitchers struggled a little bit with some control issues but they got through it. Brandy (Marlett) was able to five four good innings and Riley Adams and got the fifth inning for us. Kenedy (Urbany) battled in game two with six strong inning and Morgan Hill and looked really good in the seventh."

ASU didn't wait long to take a lead in game one. Alexis Evans drove home the first run with a double to left center to score Bailey Wallace. Becky Wilhelm followed it up with a single to first base to bring in Kenedy Urbany. Taegan Kirk singled for the fourth straight hit to plate Evans. Lanie Robinson drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI and Ambra Hill singled to left field for the fifth run of the inning.

The Javelinas cut the lead to two with three runs off one hit. The first three batters drew walks and would score on wild pitches.

Wilhelm added another RBI in the second with a sacrifice bunt to bring home Urbany from third. The 6-3 lead is all the Brandy Marlett would need. After the first inning, the sophomore would hold TAMUK to just one hit over the next three innings.

The Rambelles would add another run off a sacrifice bunt form Wallace for a 7-3 advantage. After Marlett allowed just her second hit of the game in the fourth, ASU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Evans led off the inning with a single and Wilhelm singled to right field. A walk by Kelly Johnson loaded the bases and Katlyn Herzog hit a pinch hit two-RBI single. The bases were loaded again after an infield single from Ambra Hill. Greenwell hit a RBI single up the middle to make it 9-3. A throwing error on the next play allowed Hill to score. Urbany capped off the inning by stroking a double to right center to plate two runs and make it 13-3 going into the bottom of the fifth. Urbany finished game one by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Riley Adams came in for a scoreless fifth to complete the fifth inning run-rule victory. Marlett is 5-2 on the season throw 4.0 innings and striking out five. She only allowed two hits and gave up three earned runs.

After recording 16 hits in game one, ASU would find itself down 1-0 after the first inning of game two. A leadoff walk would give TAMUK a lead after two wild pitches.

The Rambelles answered in a big way in the second and would score at least one run in every inning for the rest of the game. The first three hitters reached to load the bases. Greenwell tied the game with the first ASU run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Wallace gave the lead to Angelo State with a double to left field that scored Herzog and Johnson.

Urbany continued, who led the team with five hits on the day, singled to drive home Wallace from second for a 4-1 lead.

The lead was extended to 5-1 after a Johnson RBI double to score Kirk from first base. TAMUK battled back to trim ASU's advantage to 5-3 with two runs on a two hits and an error.

Wallace added her third RBI of the game in the fourth. The freshman blasted a ball to centerfield out of the reach of the outfielder to bring home Greenwell for a 6-3 advantage. Wallace finished the game going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Johnson again increased the cushion in the fifth with a shot down the right field line to score Kirk form second base to make it 7-3. Johnson went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the game.

The Javelinas continued to battle with a two-run home run from Roxy Chapa to trim the deficit to 7-5.

Wallace hit her third straight double of the game and Urbany helped her own cause by bringing her home on a double down the left field line for an 8-5 lead. Texas A&M-Kingsville cut it lead to two with an unearned run in the sixth.

Johnson continued to have TAMUK's number with a triple to left center and would score on a grounder form Greenwell to make it 9-6 going into the seventh inning.

Morgan Hill came into the seventh after 6.0 strong innings from the Rambelle starter Urbany. The junior only allowed four hits and struck out eight to earn her seventh win of the season. Hill picked up the save in a scoreless and hitless seventh inning. The sophomore struck out two of the three batters.

"I'm excited with the way we played," Scot said. "We are 2-0 in conference play and we want to be 4-0 at the end of this tomorrow."
