KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State women's softball team completed a four-game sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 6-1 win and a 9-1 five inning run-rule victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Rambelles improved to 15-4 on the season and start 4-0 in conference. ASU held TAMUK (6-9, 0-4 LSC) to just two runs on eight hits on the second day while scoring 15 runs and pounding out 21 hits.
"It was a great weekend and great way to start conference play," Angelo State softball coach Travis Scott said. "I thought we swung the bats well all weekend. Today was a great day in the circle for both Kenedy (Urbany) and Brandy (Marlett). They were really good and Morgan Hill coming off an injury looked good the last two days. Kelly Johnson had a big weekend and we were able to swing the bats up and down the lineup. "
The first game was a slow start for ASU as the Rambelles were held to just two hits through the first three innings. The puzzle was solved in the top of the fourth inning. Alexis Evans led off the inning with a leadoff walk and Bailey Wallace followed it up with a double to right center to put two runners on. Pinch hitter Becky Wilhelm stepped to the plate with two outs. The freshman crushed a double to left center to score the first two runs of the game.
The Javelinas cut the 2-0 lead to one scoring one run off one hit. Â It would be the only run that Brandy Marlett would allow. The sophomore earned her sixth win of the season throwing a complete game two-hitter. Marlett struck out five and walked four.
The scoring continued in the fifth inning as Evans hit an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-1.
Ciara Sheppard added to the ASU runs with a squeeze bunt single to score Kelly Johnson from third. Madison Greenwell would bring home Sheppard from second on a single up the middle.
Evans capped off the scoring with a bang. The junior hit her first home run of the season deep to centerfield in the top of the seventh to make the final 6-1. Evans finished the day going 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Â
The second game was all Angelo State and it started much like the second game ended. Wallace singled and Kenedy Urbany crushed a pitch to left field for her second home run of the year. The two-run home run made it 2-0 but ASU wasn't finished scoring.
The bases were loaded for Katlyn Herzog that hit a ball to left field. The left fielder misplayed it to score Evans and Taegan Kirk. Lanie Robinson single to centerfield to score Johnson and increase the lead to 5-1 after the first inning.
Urbany did the rest in 4.0 innings of work. The junior improved to 8-2 on the season by holding TAMUK to one earned run on six hits.
ASU went up 8-0 in the top of the third inning with three runs. Robinson doubled down the left field line and would score on a RBI single by Greenwell. Ambra Hill and Greenwell used their speed to score the second run of the inning. Greenwell took off to steal second base and TAMUK tried to throw her out. Ambra Hill took advantage and stole home on the throw. Wallace would make it 8-0 with a single up the middle to plate Greenwell. Wallace went 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.
The only TAMUK run came on a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
The Rambelles put the game away in the fifth. Brooke Mangold singled with two outs and Greenwell forced the run rule with a single to centerfield and the final 9-1 victory. Greenwell ended the day going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base.
Angelo State will return to Mayer Field on Friday, March 4 for a four-game LSC series with Eastern New Mexico. Friday's first game will start at 5 p.m.
