Rambelles Take Two from Eastern New Mexico at Mayer Field

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team swept a doubleheader from Eastern New Mexico in the first two games of its four game Lone Star Conference series 7-4 and 11-1 in five innings at Mayer Field on Friday night.

The Rambelles improved to 17-4 overall and 6-0 in the LSC. ASU combined to score 18 runs on 22 hits. ASU is now 8-0 at Mayer Field and has won seven straight games.

"We were able to swing the bats tonight and it was exciting to see," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We have been able to hit consistently. We knew ENMU could hit and battle with us. We hope to come out tomorrow and find a way to get two more victories."

The first game was a battle and ASU was down 1-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Katlyn Herzog singled to open the inning and after a fielder's choice was on third with Madison Greenwell on first. Bailey Wallace put Angelo State on the board with a two run double to right center. Alexis Evans brought her home with a single to right field to take a 3-1 advantage after three innings.

ENMU regained the lead in the fourth with three runs off Urbany to go up 4-3. The Belles responded again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kelly Johnson singled up the middle and would steal second base. She moved to third on a single through the left side by Herzog. The junior would advance to second on the throw to put runners at second and third.

Ambra Hill used her speed to beat out a single to short that scored Johnson from third to tie the game. Greenwell cleared the bases with a double down the left field line and put ASU on top 6-4. Greenwell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Urbany would find her groove in the circle getting out of a situation with runners on first and third in the fifth and only allowing one baserunner in the sixth.  The Helotes native improved to 10-2 on the season throwing 7.0 innings and only allowing three earned runs. She struck out three and only walked two.

The Belles added an insurance run in the sixth as Herzog drew a leadoff walk. The Geronimo native crossed the plate on a Wallace sacrifice fly for the final 7-4 victory. Wallace led the team with three RBIs in game one.

"They gave Kenedy (Urbany) all that she could handle early but she was able to find a grove late," Scott said. "We were able to respond every time they scored in game one and it was good game."

ASU jumped out to a quick lead in the night cap. Urbany sent a laser over the left field fence for a three run home run in the top of the first inning. It is the junior's third home run of the season.

Alexis Evans stepped to the plate next and sent a shot to the exact same spot for a solo home run for a 4-0 lead. It was her second home run of the season. Ambra Hill brought in two more runs with a triple to right field to put ASU on top 6-0.

The runs continued in the second. Wallace started the inning with her 10th double of the season to centerfield and would score on a triple from Urbany. Taegan Kirk laced a double to left center to drive in Urbany and make it 6-0. Urbany finished game two by going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Morgan Hill, making her first start since early February, held ENMU to just one hit through the first four innings.

The Belles added three runs in the bottom of the third. Brooke Mangold singled over the shortstop's head and advanced to third on a double from Greenwell. A RBI fielder's choice from Wallace plated Mangold and Riley Adams singled to bring home Greenwell. Wallace would add the 11th run by scoring on a wild pitch.

Morgan Hill earned her first career victory at ASU by only allowing four hits in 5.0 innings. She limited ENMU to one run and struck out a career high six batters. It is ASU's fifth run-rule victory of the year.

"Game two we really jumped out on them in the first inning," Scott said. "Kenedy's line drive home run and Alexis (Evans) with a blast for the back-to-back is what you want out of your three and four hitters. We were able to put it away by scoring six and Morgan Hill was awesome tonight. She was fun to watch and for her to slow down ENMU was big."

Angelo State will return to Mayer field for the final two games of the series at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
