"I'm really pleased with what we were able to do on the road," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "Even the game at TWU we played well enough for a chance to win. I couldn't be happier with what this team did and how we did it. I'm really proud of them and know that the No. 2 seed is a big accomplishment."
Jasmine Prophet collected her fifth double-double of the season with a game high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Mitchell added her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Dorsey chipped 15 points. Â Â
"I didn't think we played our best game," Baker said. "We played well in spots. Brea Mitchell stepped up and played like a senior for us. We knew going in that our four and five positions were going to be able to attack them. We knew for us to be successful that Brea and Jasmine Prophet were going to have to play well and they did."
Angelo State used defense in the first two quarters to build a 16 points first half lead. The Javelinas were held to single digits (nine and eight) in the first two quarters of the game. TAMUK held an early 5-4 lead through the first four minutes of the game until a layup by Prophet sparked a 10-0 run. Â The run was capped off with back-to-back layups from Mitchell. Kiahna Thompson ended the scoring in the first quarter with a 3-pointer to put ASU on to 18-9 after one quarter.
The two teams were scores through the first three minutes of the second quarter. A Prophet layup at the 6:20 mark in the second quarter was the first basket for ASU. Mitchell hit a jumper and the Belles would outscore TAMUK 11-4 over the final 3:04 to take a 33-17 in at the break.
Texas A&M-Kingsville would hold ASU to just 12 points in the third quarter while scoring 16 to trim a 16 point lead down to eight with 2:01 to go in the third. A layup by Prophet pushed a single digit to 10 and Lexi Murphy drained a 3-pointer to make it a 45-33 going into the fourth.
ASU would slowly build its lead into a 22-point lead with a pair of free throws form Prophet at the 1:49 mark. TAMUK would only get as close as 11 in the fourth quarter doing it twice. The first time at the 6:53 mark Dorsey responded with five straight points. The second time at the 5:02 mark spurred a 16-2 run to put the game away.
