SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team defeated Texas A&M-International 6-5 in eight innings and shutout Northwestern Oklahoma State 6-0 on the first day of the ASU George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field on Friday.
The Rambelles moved to 2-0 and are 10-2 in season openers under head coach Travis Scott. ASU recorded seven hits in each game and didn't commit an error.
"It was great to get back out on the field and get the season started," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Fortunately, we were able to get two wins. I thought we did a lot of good things today and we didn't make any errors. If we can go out and play solid defense with our pitching staff we have a good chance to win. Everybody got an at-bat and we are still searching different lineups depending on pitchers, conditions, etc. We got two good teams wins and everybody contributed today."
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the eight, Morgan Hill started the inning at second. She advanced to third after tagging on a fly out from Becky Wilhelm. A walk and an error allowed M. Hill to score to cut the deficit to 5-4. Ambra Hill picked up her second walk of the game to load the bases with one out.
A fielder's choice left ASU with one out as Bailey Wallace stepped to the plate and was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded. It was ruled she stepped into the strike zone and a strike was called to make the count 2-2. The freshman shrugged it off and drew a walk to bring in the tying run. With the bases loaded, Kenedy Urbany took a first pitch strike and then watched four straight balls to bring in the game-winning RBI with a walk.
Brandy Marlett, the LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, earned her first win of the season in relief striking out three in 2.0 innings of work. She gave up only two hits. Morgan Hill threw 6.0 innings in her first career start. She gave up six hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
"Game one was a really good game," Scott said. "I was proud of our pitchers in Morgan (Hill) and Brandy (Marlett). They threw the ball well. Texas A&M-International scrapped and they did a good job. We were able to show a lot of discipline late in the game and do what we had to do to win the game.
The Rambelles faced their first deficit of the season in the second inning of game one. The Dustdevils scored two runs on three hits in the top of the second. ASU was able to answer in the third. Robinson doubled to centerfield and then took advantage of Hill's speed. Hill stole second and the TAMIU catcher made a bad throw to allow Robinson to score. Wallace drove home her first collegiate RBI with a single to right field.
TAMIU had the Rambelles down in both the sixth and eighth innings. Marlett stepped to the plate for her first career at-bat. The sophomore came through with a single up the middle to score pinch runner Kelly Johnson to tie the game in the sixth. TAMIU started the eighth with a runner on second and a single drove the go-ahead run in. A wild pitch and a sacrifice brought in a second to put the Rambelles down for the third time in the game.
The Rambelles turned around to face Northwestern Oklahoma State. Urbany started game two and was masterful. The junior, who was named to the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division II Player of the Year Watch List on Wednesday, threw a complete game shutout. She struck out four batter and held NWOSU scoreless until the fourth innings. The Helotes native only gave up four hits and didn't allow a walk for her first win of 2016.
"In game two, Kenedy Urbany was spot on and had great control, Scott said. "She was able to help her own cause in the batter's box as well."
The offensive responded six runs on seven hits. Hill drove in the first run of the game on a single to score Alexis Evans. Â Urbany helped her own cause by going two-for-two with a RBI and scoring a run. Robinson, Katlyn Herzog and Ambra Hill each recorded RBIs and Hill scored two runs.
The Rambelles return to Mayer Field for games at 12:45 p.m. against Northwestern Oklahoma State followed by Adams State at 3:15 p.m.
