SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team won two slugfests over Northwestern Oklahoma State, 12-7, and Adams State, 9-8, on day two of the ASU George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field on Saturday.
The Rambelles improved to 4-0 on the season and combined 21 runs on 18 hits. Nine players recorded a hit and at least one RBI during the two games. NWOSU dropped to 0-3 on the year and Adams State was 1-3 after the game. The 14 hits against NWOSU is a season high and the most since March 7, 2015 against ENMU.
"It was a struggle today," Angelo State softball coach Travis Scott said. "We gave up too many runs but I was proud of the way we battled. We had to swing it and we were able to. Last year we weren't able to slug with people but I was proud of the way we did. Bailey Wallace, Becky Wilhelm and Riley Adams had some big hits for us today. We have been playing some different personnel and we are going to keep giving some people some opportunities and doing what we can to win games. It is a total team effort. We had some great crowds today and we appreciate everybody coming out to watch."
The Rambelles started scoring early with two runs in the first inning against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Madison Greenwell led the game off with a double and scored on a Bailey Wallace single up the middle. Morgan Hill, who started the game as pitcher, helped her own cause with an RBI single to bring in Kenedy Urbany.
NWOSU responded with four runs, three unearned, in the second inning to take the lead 4-2. Urbany drove in Wallace in the top of the third with a double down the left field line and would later score on a passed ball to tie the game at four after three inning.
Brandy Marlett came in relief of Hill slowed down NWOSU in the third and fourth. ASU gave some run support in the fourth. With runners at first and third, Urbany hit a ball the first baseman couldn't pick up to reach on an error and score Lanie Robinson. Riley Adams stepped to the plate for the third time and delivered a double to left field that scored Wallace and Urbany. Becky Wilhelm picked up her first collegiate RBI with a double to right center to put ASU on top 8-4 after four innings.
Wilhelm went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and scored a run.
The Rangers answer with three runs in the fifth. NWOSU recorded three straight hits including back-to-back home runs to trim ASU's deficit to 8-7. The Rambelles extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Wallace drove home Greenwell from third and Wilhelm continued the youth movement with a single to score two to make it 12-7. Greenwell was 3-for-four with two doubles, a single, a walk and two runs scored.
Marlett only allowed two hits over the final two innings to earn her second win of the season. The sophomore threw 4.2 innings and striking out six.
Game two was another slugfest but this time with Adams State. The scoring in the first inning continued but this time in a big way. ASU scored eight runs on just two hits in the first innings. Plate discipline was key with seven players drawing a walk and five of the walks coming with two outs. Greenwell, Urbany, Wilhelm, Teagen Kirk, Robinson, Brooke Mangold and Ambra Hill each earned walks. Greenwell, who hit twice in the inning, drove in two runs on a double to left field and Wallace added an RBI with an infield single to put ASU on top 8-0.
The Grizzlies responded with six runs in the second and two runs in the third to tie the game at eight. The Rambelles would score the game winning run in the bottom of the third. Wallace stepped to the plate with two outs and Ambra Hill sitting at second base. The freshman roped a double to left center to bring Hill home for a 9-8 advantage. Wallace was the best ASU hitter recorded five hits, one double, three RBIs and scoring three runs.
Urbany continued to battle in game two. The junior earned her second win of the season in 5.0 innings of work. Marlett came in for the sixth and seventh. She didn't allow a hit and struck out two for her first save of the season.
"I was pleased with the way Kenedy (Urbany) battled in game two with the strike zone being a little tight," Scott said. "She kept battling despite giving up those six runs and then Brandy (Marlett) came in and did an outstanding job of finishing."
