SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team finished with a perfect 6-0 record after a 9-1 win over Adams State in five innings and 9-6 victory over Texas A&M-International on the final day of the George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field on Sunday.
The Rambelles improved to 6-0 by scoring 18 runs in the two games. ASU drew seven combined walks and ended the day with 19 hits. Five players recorded RBIs with Madison Greenwell and Becky Wilhelm tops on the team with five each. Bailey Wallace, Kenedy Urbany and Taegan Kirk each had two RBIs a piece and 10 players earned a hit.
 "I am excited about what I saw this weekend," Angelo State softball coach Travis Scott said. "We were definitely challenged and give credit to the teams that were in this tournament. It was a great weekend of softball and a lot of competition. We had a couple of come from behind wins and I love that they didn't quit."
Angelo State returned to the field after a 9-1 run rule victory over Adams State for the ASU George McCorkle Challenge against Texas A&M-International. ASU found itself down 6-5 after TAMIU took its third lead of the game in the top of the sixth. The Rambelles were forced to respond. Alexis Evans earned a walk on a pinch hit opportunity and Urbany followed it up with another walk to put two on. Bailey Wallace hit a single that dropped between the right fielder and first baseman. Â Ambra Hill, who was pinch running for Evans, used her speed to slide into home to tie the game at six.
The Rambelles still had two runners at second and third. Madison Greenwell recorded her third hit of the day, a triple to left center, to bring in two runs. The sophomore finished the game going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Riley Adams reached on an error that would score Greenwell for a 9-6 advantage going into the top of the seventh.
Kenedy Urbany had battled throughout the game and after a rough first innings only allowed five hits and two runs. With two runners on, the junior forced a pop fly that Ciara Sheppard snagged to grab the second out. Brooke Mangold helped with the final out running down a line drive to secure the 9-6 win.
Urbany earned her third win of the weekend by pitching 7.0 innings. She struck out four and scored two runs to help her cause.
The Dustdevils took a lead in the top of the first with four runs off Urbany.
The Rambelles was only able to get two hits through the first three innings off TAMIU's Krystal DeLaCruz but the tide changed in the fourth. Greenwell came home on a fielder's choice and Riley Adams earned a easy stroll to the plate on an illegal pitch.
The Dustdevils added an unearned run in the fifth. ASU didn't stop scoring in the fifth. Urbany and Wallace were both hit-by-pitches to put runners at first and second. A single by Greenwell loaded the bases. Becky Wilhelm continued her stellar start to her ASU career. The freshman drove a double to right center to clear the bases and tie the game at five.
ASU was able to earn the 9-1 run-rule victory in five inning sin the first game against Adams State. Wilhelm drove in two runs with a single through the right side for a 2-0 lead after the first.
Adams State cut the ASU advantage to one with a single run in the top of the fourth. It would be the only run Brandy Marlett would allow in her third win of the season. The sophomore threw 5.0 innings and struck out five batters. She held the Grizzlies to four hits on the day.
The Rambelles answered in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. Evans and Ambra Hill were both on base with the top of the lineup at bat. The top four hitters responded with four straight hits. Greenwell started it off with a RBI single and Wallace beat out a dribbler to the shortstop. Urbany drove a double to deep center to score two and Kirk brought her home with a single up the middle. ASU scored five runs off five hits and a walk to go up 7-1.
The Rambelles put the game away in the bottom of the fifth. The bases were loaded with Greenwell at the plate. The sophomore slapped a double to left field to score Evans and Lanie Robinson to make it 9-1 and force the run-rule.
 "I thought we showed a lot of great plate discipline," Scott. "We drew a ton of walks and didn't chasse pitches out of the zone. We were able to put some runs on the board. It wasn't easy. We had a lot of freshmen step up and you are going to see a lot of freshmen in the lineup this year."
The Rambelles will return to action in Canyon next Friday, February 12 – Saturday, February 14 at the West Texas A&M-Invitational held at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.Â
