SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team won its fifth straight conference game 67-53 over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Belles (15-5, 8-2 LSC) have now won the most games in a single season since the 2010-11 season. ASU limited Eastern New Mexico (8-12, 3-7 LSC) to just 31.7-percent form the field and outrebounded the Greyhounds 53-47. The Belles were able to score 26 points off 22 offensive rebounds and are now 11-1 at home this season.
"We didn't shoot the ball very well today," Angelo State women's basketball coach
Kevin Baker said after the game. I was happy that we were able to guy it out and we played really well defensively. Today we were able to bring our defense despite not shooting well."
Jasmine Prophet had a monster game with a career high 15 points and score 17 points for her second straight double-double of the season. The junior also blocked three shots in 38 minutes of action.
Taylor Dorsey led all scorers with 18 points. The junior grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists.
ASU started the game by building a 12-2 lead through the first six minute of the game. Dorsey scored six of the first 12 points and Prophet chipped in four. ENMU would answer with an 8-0 run before a jumper by
Christina Robinson to stop the run and make the score 14-10.
A 16-12 first quarter lead quickly expanded in the second quarter.
Lexi Murphy opened the quarter with a 3-pointer to spark a nine straight points and Prophet scored six of the nine points to put ASU on top 28-14. The Greyhounds found some life and used a run of 12-2 run to bring the deficit into single digits at 30-26. A free throw by
KeAnna Kelly was followed by a
Brea Mitchell 3-pointer to make it 34-26 at halftime.
The Belles kept its lead in double digits throughout the third quarter while holding the Greyhounds to just nine points. ASU scored the first six points of the second half and twice pushed its lead to 14 in the third quarter alone. The game was put away in the fourth quarter as the lead was pushed to 23. A Kelly 3-pointer made it 62-42 and moments later Murphy sank a pair of free throws for a 66-43 lead. ENMU scored 10-1 run to end the game for the final 67-53.
Kassandra Harris led ENMU with 14 points.
The Belles will welcome Tarleton State on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center. The pink Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirts will be available $15 and bid sheets for the pink jerseys will be available.
