No. 21 Rambelles Split Doubleheader with Texas Woman's

SAN ANGELO – The No. 21 Angelo State softball team split a doubleheader with Texas Woman's winning game one 6-5 in eight innings and dropping game two 7-6 on Saturday at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles are now 19-10 on the season and 8-6 in the LSC while the Pioneers sit at 18-10 and 7-3 in conference. Each team won the game they were out hit in and neither team led by more than two runs. Angelo State drew a season high 16 walks in the first game.

Lanie Robinson had bases loaded with only one out after ASU had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk. The first pitch to Robinson was a bunt attempt and TWU caught Johnson too far off the bag for the second out of the inning. The senior stepped back to the plate and was down in the count with one ball and two strikes. She got the count to full and fouled off two straight pitches to stay alive. The next pitch she drove to left center to score Taegan Kirk from second base and end the game.

The first game was tied at three going into the seventh inning after ASU battled back from a 3-1 deficit.

TWU scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th but the Rambelles responded. Morgan Hill put a ball in the right center gap and used her speed to get to third with only one out. Robinson tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. She finished with two RBIs on the day.

The Pioneers regained the lead in the top of the eighth but Angelo State wasn't done. Kenedy Urbany led the inning off with a walk and was pinch runner Brooke Mangold was sacrificed to second. Two walks later and the bases were loaded for Morgan Hill. The sophomore drew a bases loaded walk to score Urbany and tie the game.

Hill earned her third win of the season with a complete game. The sophomore allowed five runs and struck out three. The eight innings is the longest outing of her career. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs.

The Rambelles took a lead in the first inning as Bailey Wallace scored on a Kelly Johnson RBI fielder's choice. TWU took its first lead with three runs in the top of the third.

ASU trimmed the lead down to 1 as Kirk hit a RBI single to right field to plate Urbany. The game was tied at three in the fifth on a bases loaded walk from Madison Greenwell. The sophomore drew three walks on the day.

The second game was a close one similar to the first.

TWU scored first with a solo home run in the top of the first. Greenwell drew her 12th walk of the season and Urbany drove her home with a RBI single to tie the game.

Becky Wilhelm put ASU on top in a big way in the second. Kirk led the inning off with a double to right center and was able to trot home. Wilhelm turned on a pitch and sent it over the right field fence for a two-run home run. It is her second home run of the season.

TWU tied it at three in the top of the third with two runs off of four hits. The Rambelles responded with Kirk hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Urbany from third to lead 4-3 after three inning.

TWU continued battling and scored an unearned run in the fifth to tie the game at fifth. Once again, ASU answered. Alexis Evans singled to start the bottom of the fifth. The junior has now reached base safely in 26 straight games. Kirk, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, stroked a RBI double to right center. She scored as Wilhelm singled off the center field fence and gives ASU a 6-4 advantage.

TWU would score three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to go up 7-6. Kirk gave ASU a chance with two outs by hitting a double to center field. The Pioneers forced a fly to deep centerfield to end the game.

The Rambelles will conclude the series with Texas Woman's with a doubleheader at Mayer Field starting at 1 p.m.
