STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State softball team lost two games, 5-4 and 4-3, to split the season series with Tarleton State on Saturday in Stephenville.
The Rambelles fall to 21-14 on the season and 10-10 in the LSC. ASU was able to out hit the TexAnns (19-18, 4-12 LSC) 10-7 in game one and 9-7 in game two but stranded a combined 20 runs.
"It was frustrating with two more one run losses," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. The three unearned runs in the first inning of game two was the difference. We have to keep our heads right and get ready for a big week of softball."
The Rambelles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Becky Wilhelm drew a bases loaded walk to score Madison Greenwell and Morgan Hill was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Kenedy Urbany.
Tarleton State got a run back in the second after a bases loaded walk. ASU answered with two runs in the top of the third. A double by M. Hill scored Alexis Evans and Becky Wilhelm to make it 4-1. Evans reached with her team high 26th walk of the season while M. Hill went 2-for-2 in the first game with three RBIs.
Tarleton State scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Angelo State tried to score the go-ahead run in the sixth but left three runners stranded. ASU left 12 runners on base in the first game. The TexAnns won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI single to left field.
Kenedy Urbany and Morgan Hill both pitched for ASU. Hill threw 3.2 innings and gave up four runs on four hits while Urbany was credited with the loss giving up one run on three hits.
Tarleton State took a 3-0 lead scoring all three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two.
The Rambelles started to chip away in the second and fourth innings. Taegan Kirk drove in Evans from third to make it 3-1 after the second. Â Evans was able to extend her streak of reaching base safely to 32
Katlyn Herzog double to centerfield in the top of the fourth and advanced to third on a single from M. Hill. Kirk once again recorded a RBI with a single to left field. The freshman finished going 2-for-2 with two RBIs in game two.
The TexAnns took a 4-2 lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
An infield single by Madison Greenwell scored Herzog from third to cut TSU's advantage to 4-3 but the Rambelles would not get any closer.
Brandy Marlett pitched 6.0 innings and gave up four runs but only one earned. She struck out five batters and allowed seven hits. The sophomore is now 7-7 on the season.
The Rambelles will visit San Antonio on Wednesday, March 30 to play No. 9 St. Mary's for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
