SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State softball team split its doubleheader with No. 9 St. Mary's winning 9-1 before falling 7-1 in San Antonio on Wednesday night.
The Rambelles move to 22-15 on the season with the split and are now 21-4 in games where ASU scores at least six runs or more. St. Mary's is now 29-7 on the season. ASU combined for 16 hits and 10 runs in the two games.
"It was a tale of two different games tonight," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Brandy Marlett and Kenedy Urbany were really good in game one and we created a lot of run production. We didn't get the same in game two. We are hoping for a huge crowd this weekend with a lot of kids in uniforms for Youth Weekend."
The Rambelles were down 1-0 after the first inning of game one as St. Mary's scored one run on two hits. A combination of Brandy Marlett and Kenedy Urbany would shut down the Rattlers the rest of the way. Marlett, the starter, would only allow one run on three hits in four innings of work. The sophomore struck out five batters in her eighth win of the season.
ASU would take the lead for good in the second. Lanie Robinson hit an RBI single to tie the game and would score the go-ahead run on a bases loaded walk from Bailey Wallace. Two more runs were plated after a St. Mary's throwing error.
Up 4-1, the Rambelles continued scoring in the third. Becky Wilhelm led the inning off with a single and later scored on a throwing error. Wallace hit a RBI single up the middle to bring home Kelly Johnson for a 6-1 advantage.
Urbany took over pitching duties in the fifth inning and held St. Mary's scoreless. She only allowed one hit in three innings of work and struck out five in her first save of the season.
The junior capped the night off with a bang at the plate. She took a pitch over the right field fence for her fifth home run of the season to make the final score 9-1.
Game two started with St. Mary's scoring two runs before the Rambelles answered. Morgan Hill doubled to centerfield for ASU's first hit to leadoff the third inning and scored a wild pitch from third base. Hill would record two of ASU's five hits in game two.
It would be the only run ASU would score. The Rambelles were held to five hits by StMU's Jordan Russell. The Rattlers would score seven runs on eight hits off Morgan Hill and Urbany. Hill was credited with the loss and falls to 4-4 on the season.
The Rambelles will host Midwestern State for Youth Weekend this Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 at Mayer Field. All youth eighth grade and below wearing a uniform will receive free admission all weekend. Fans will also get a chance to run the bases and receive autographs after the games from the Rambelles.Â
