ALLEN, Texas –The Angelo State women's basketball advanced to its first Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship final since 2006 with a 70-63 win over Texas Woman's on Friday afternoon in Allen.
The Belles improve to 21-7 on the season and will play in the program's seventh overall title game. ASU is 4-2 in tournament final appearances with the last title coming in 2005. Angelo State held the Pioneers (21-9) to 31.9-percent from the floor including 26.5-percent in the first half. The Belles scored 38 points in the pain and 16 fast break points. Â
"I'm really proud of our team's toughness and resiliency," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "I can't say enough about Kenesha Saygo of TWU. She was terrific and put together a really nice game. They are well coached and it was a big win. TWU is a solid opponent and a good win for us. We started the way we wanted to with the fast start. We felt if we could rebound we could control them. That was the difference in the game for us."
Jasmine Prophet, the LSC Player of the Year led ASU in scoring with 21 points after being held to just two points in the LSC quarterfinal. The junior also grabbed eight rebounds. Brea Mitchell recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and a career high 14 rebounds. The senior collected 12 defensive rebounds on the night. Christina Robinson added a career high 13 rebounds and six rebounds. Taylor Dorsey scored seven points and had a game high seven rebounds.
ASU had a 55-45 lead with 7:48 to go in the fourth quarter until a TWU 15-6 run made it a one point game. With 2:03 to go in the game. The two teams traded free throws until Robinson sank a layup off a fast break.
TWU's Kenesha Saygo responded with a layup with 1:04 to play to bring the score to 64-3 and it would be as close as TWU would get.
Mitchell took over scoring on a jumper and after a missed Pioneer shot was fouled. The senior drained both free throws to extend the lead to 68-63with 34 second to play. ASU would hold TWU scoreless over the final 1:04 to secure the 70-63 victory.
The Belles s had a hot start to the game scoring 13 straight points over the first six minutes. The defense and rebounding held TWU scoreless until the 4:02 mark of the first quarter. Prophet was involved early and often scoring 10 of the team's first 13 points. TWU would cut the lead down to 18-9 at the end of the first.
 ASU held a 34-23 at halftime and would hold an eight point lead after the end of the third quarter at 49-41.
TWU's Saygo was the only Pioneer in double figures with 22 points.
 The Belles will face the winner of Tarleton State and West Texas A&M at 3 p.m. in the LSC Tournament Championship. With a win, ASU will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The last time Angelo State advanced to the NCAA Tournament was in 2007-08.Â
