SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team swept a doubleheader 3-0 and 5-1 from UTPB behind strong pitching performances from Brandy Marlett, Morgan Hill and Kenedy Urbany on Wednesday night at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles improve to 29-16 and have won eight of our last 10 games while the Falcons fall to 11-35 on the season. ASU recorded 17 hits while limiting UTPB to just nine.
"I was really happy with all three pitchers performances," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "There command was really good after having time off this weekend and that was exciting to see. I thought they were two well played games and I was glad to see the ball fly out of the ball park for us a little bit. We now have to prepare for a big weekend at Texas A&M-Commerce."
Brandy Marlett continued to dominate in the circle by recording her second straight shutout. The sophomore limited UTPB to just three hits over seven innings for her 13th win of the season and her seventh win in her last eight appearances.
Taegan Kirk scored the only run ASU would need on a RBI single from Brooke Mangold in the bottom of the second.
The Rambelles added two insurance runs in the bottom of the third. Kenedy Urbany ripped a double in to left center on the first pitch she saw to bring home Madison Greenwell for a 2-0 advantage. It is Urbany's 14th double of the season. The final run came on a bloop single to bring in Urbany from third.
Marlett only allowed two hits over the final four innings to secure the win including striking out the final two batters. She struck out seven batters in the game and only walked three.
The Rambelles took a 1-0 lead in game on in the bottom of the first. Bailey Wallace was hit for the 21st time this season. Alexis Evans singled up the middle to plate Wallace for a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Urbany followed Marlett's lead by holding UTPB scoreless over the first three innings. UTPB tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run.
The junior helped her own cause and put ASU back on top in the bottom of the fifth. She hit a ball down the right field line that made it over the fence to make it 2-1. It is her eighth home run of the season.
Morgan Hill would come in relief and sit down UTPB in order in the sixth. She copied Urbany with a solo home run over the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. It is Hill's second home run of the season. The Rambelles added two more runs after the home run. Wallace hit a sacrifice fly to score Ambra Hill from third and Urbany added her second RBI of the game with a single to right field to make it 5-0.
M. Hill would put the Falcons down in order to record her second save of the season. Urbany earned her 10th win of the season by limiting UTPB to six hits and one run in 5.0 innings of work.
The Rambelles will head to Texas A&M-Commerce for a four-game Lone Star Conference series this Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16.
